Industry: Aerospace, Defense, Hardware & Materials Testing

We are actively seeking an Environmental Simulation & Materials Testing Specialist to join our laboratory team in Dartmouth, NS. We are open to candidates across Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 qualifications—we will match the role's responsibilities and compensation to your experience level!

- THIS IS: Aerospace & Defense hardware testing. You will subject manufactured parts, materials, and electronics to physical stress simulations (thermal shock, temperature/humidity chambers, mechanical shock, and vibration shakers).
- THIS IS NOT: Environmental science, ecology, or water/soil quality analysis.

About the Role

Are you a hands‑on mechanical or electronics technician/technologist looking to work with specialized environmental testing equipment? ESL Labs is hiring an Environmental Simulation & Materials Testing Specialist to join our laboratory team in Dartmouth, NS.

In this role, you will perform environmental simulation and materials testing for leading aerospace and defense clients. You will work with specialized environmental chambers, vibration shakers, shock machines, and precision data acquisition systems to ensure products meet rigid quality and performance standards.

What You’ll Do (Scaled by Experience)

Depending on your background and experience level, your day-to-day will involve:

- Environmental & Materials Testing: Execute environmental simulation tests (temperature, humidity, thermal shock, vibration shakers, shock machines)

according to predefined procedures and client specifications.
- Precision Measurement & Instrumentation: Utilize specialized measuring equipment including thermocouples, micrometers, calipers, extensometers, LVDTs, strain gages, pressure transducers, and accelerometers. Apply key metrology concepts such as precision, uncertainty, tolerance, repeatability, and hysteresis.
- Lab Maintenance & Calibration: Assist with or manage the calibration, verification, and preventive maintenance of laboratory tools and equipment.
- Data Collection & Technical Reporting: Accurately record test data, organize test logs, and write formal technical test reports complete with data and image documentation.
- Proposals & Method Development (Levels 2 & 3): Generate technical proposals, prepare client quotes, and develop current test procedures or operational methods for unique client requirements under AS9100 quality standards.
- Leadership & Mentorship (Levels 2 & 3): Provide on-the-job training, supervise junior specialists, and coordinate complex testing schedules.

Education & Background:

- College Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics Engineering Technology / Technician (Mechanical background strongly preferred).
- Level 1:

Open to entry-level college graduates or candidates with initial experience in materials or environmental testing.
- Level 2: 3 to 5 years of direct hands‑on environmental or materials testing laboratory experience.
- Level 3: 3 to 5+ years of progressive testing experience with proven leadership and technical writing capabilities.

Technical Skills & Familiarity:

- Strong understanding of metrology principles, sensors, and data acquisition systems.
- Familiarity with control strategy (PID), LabVIEW, SolidWorks, or CAD design software is a strong asset.
- Experience working within an AS9100 quality management system is preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).

Security Clearance, Residency & Citizenship Requirements

Due to the nature of our defense and aerospace projects, candidates must meet strict Canadian Government Security Clearance criteria:

- Citizenship: Must be a Canadian Citizen (or Citizen of a NATO member nation) eligible for NATO Secret Clearance.
- Residency Requirement: Must have continuously resided in Canada for the past 10 consecutive years to satisfy background check requirements for Canadian Secret / NATO Secret Level II clearance and Controlled Goods Program (CGP) registration.
- Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
