Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, and working collaboratively and in partnership with the interprofessional care team, this role provides direct nursing care to patients recovering from anaesthetics within the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) by assessing, planning, providing, coordinating and evaluating nursing care.

Responsibilities

- Assess post‑anaesthetic patients, collecting and evaluating information, making a nursing diagnosis, and determining appropriate interventions. Plan, perform, evaluate and document nursing care.




- Provide nursing care to address critical care needs of patients according to physicians' and anaesthetists' orders, initiating immediate treatment as required and modifying care as needs change.
- Communicate and share information with interdisciplinary health‑care team members, collaborating with Physicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Patient Care Coordinators, Clinical Nurse Educators, and other professionals to resolve issues and adjust care plans.
- Coordinate nursing care, set priorities, assign and delegate tasks to support staff, and make referrals to the interprofessional team per protocols and practice standards.
- Maintain a protected and therapeutic environment, following prevention principles and emergency procedures.
- Establish a therapeutic relationship, demonstrating empathy, trust, and respect, and advocating for patients’ rights to privacy, dignity, and access to information.
- Document assessments, nursing diagnosis, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes, and referrals per practice standards and Fraser Health procedures.
- Participate in nursing committees, care conferences, and councils as assigned or with the Manager’s agreement.
- Engage in research and quality improvement activities, identifying patient care issues, collecting data, and recommending corrective actions.
- Attend in‑services and educational programs, setting personal learning goals and updating clinical competence.
- Act as a preceptor or mentor to new nursing staff and students,



sharing information and demonstrating care activities during orientation.
- Provide feedback to the Manager regarding patient care programs, policy/clinical decision support tools, and equipment.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing.
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- One (1) year of recent relevant clinical nursing experience in the designated area and completion of post‑graduate coursework or certification applicable to the area, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
