Under the supervision of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Coordinator, the FASD Mentoring Program is a paraprofessional intervention for women struggling with addictions and those living with FASD. The mentor provides practical support to prevent and reduce FASD births through one-on-one advocacy and guidance.
Responsibilities
Mentorship & Support
Provide support creating healthy environments to achieve goals and maintain connections with women who may be pregnant or parenting.
Advocate and provide emotional support throughout pregnancies.
Assist with mentorship program planning.
Attend the core values of the mentorship program.
Provide emotional support during the first six months of mentoring and evaluate progress every four months.
Assist clients in creating action plans and identifying strengths and factors that support positive change.
Facilitate support in balancing responsibilities.
Support clients in accessing resources and services.
Demonstrate ability to function creatively and independently.
Support families in facilitating newsletters and brochures.
Knowledge Requirements
Robust communication skills in writing and oral communication.
Teamwork is essential.
Compassion and empathy.
Knowledge of FASD.
Basic counselling skills.
Ability to record keeping and computer skills.
Qualifications
Valid Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Valid CPR and First Aid Certification.
Ability to speak an Aboriginal language is an asset.
Ability to work under pressure.
Ability to maintain respect and dignity toward families.
Knowledge of community-based programming and First Nations culture.
