Embark on a PhD journey in respiratory neuroscience at the University of Alberta’s Laboratory of Dr. Silvia Pagliardini. Focus on the role of central pattern generators in regulating ventilation during different sleep states.
This graduate position is dedicated to understanding neural control mechanisms involved in respiration through methodologies such as in vivo electrophysiology and pharmacology. Candidates with a solid foundation in physiology and neuroscience, especially those experienced in rodent sleep studies, whole body plethysmography, and related surgical techniques, will be prioritized. Effective communication and independence are critical for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities:
• Explore neural control of respiration across sleep states
• Perform electrophysiological recordings in animal models
• Engage in pharmacological manipulations of brainstem neurons
• Collect and analyze data related to sleep and respiration
• Work collaboratively within a research team
Requirements:
• MSc or equivalent in a relevant field
• Background in physiology and neuroscience required
• Familiarity with EEG and EMG recording
• Solid problem-solving and communication skills
• Proof of English proficiency if applicable
