Overview

Aecon Utilities, part of Aecon’s in‑house engineering division, is delivering the Hamilton LRT project – a 14‑kilometre modern light rail transit line in Ontario. The Project Designer, Utility Design role supports the Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Alliance, reporting to the Project Manager and the Project Designer, Utility Design. The incumbent prepares and reviews dry utility design drawings and calculations, ensuring accuracy, quality, and timely delivery of design packages while collaborating across the project team.

Responsibilities

- Prepare moderate to complex design drawings, quantity calculations, and as‑built drawings for utility and LRT projects using software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, SPIDA Calc, PLS‑CADD, IKE Office, Pull Planner, and AGi32.
- Interpret permit drawings, corridor plans, and municipal/city regulations to define full project scope, including rail clearances, utility conflicts, and transit authority standards.
- Apply LRT‑specific design requirements (grounding, bonding, electromagnetic compatibility, stray current mitigation, clearance envelopes) and integrate with track, systems, and civil infrastructure.
- Collaborate with Project Engineers to ensure drawing accuracy and provide feedback on internal design processes and tools for continuous improvement.
- Consult with Project Engineers and Field Inspectors to resolve complex design and field issues, such as utility conflicts and clearance violations in rail environments.
- Manage project schedules and deliverables with support from senior team members, tracking quality and staying within budgeted hours.
- Train Project Technicians on design fundamentals, quality expectations, and LRT‑specific considerations.

Qualifications

- Post‑secondary education in Electrical, Civil Engineering or Architecture.
- Minimum eight years of design experience with utility projects, specifically telecommunications, hydro, and gas.
- Proficiency in reviewing electrical/civil engineering drawings and site plans, with strong understanding of municipal standards.
- Minimum three years of drafting experience using AutoCAD or MicroStation, with advanced AutoCAD skills including script, tool, and menu customization.
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, BIM, and Common Data Environment is an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) with robust document creation and data analysis capabilities.
- Familiarity with CSA standards is a strong asset.
- Excellent safety and attendance record and previously demonstrated strong safety awareness.

Compensation

The expected pay range for this role is $60,000 – $80,000 per year. Individual pay is determined based on factors such as location, education, experience, unique skills, certifications, specialized training, and role complexity.
