Women Helping Each Other
and FNHSSM Employment Prospect:

Wiijii’idiwag Ikwewag Inc. (Women Helping Each Other) & the First Nations Health and
Social Secretariat of Manitoba (FNHSSM) have established a partnership to relaunch the
birth helper services through the Ikiskawasoot: She Carries Life research project.

Ikiskawasoot is a Northern Indigenous pregnancy care network led by Indigenous Birth Helpers (IBH) that will provide culturally safe care to improve the prenatal, birthing, and postpartum experience for First Nation Women and their families.

The Birth Helpers would provide support to mothers giving birth at the Thompson
General Hospital (TGH) and provide dedicated birth support in Winnipeg for those who must be transferred there for labour and delivery.

The successful candidate will possess:
A solid understanding of traditional cultural teachings, songs and knowledge of traditional Indigenous birthing and parenting practices as relevant to their own communities and experiences;
Experience working with First Nations/Indigenous Elders, women and families at a community and/or program level;




Ability to build and maintain respectful and effective relationships with diverse groups, organizations, and individuals;
Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with mothers and families;
Ability to multi-task, set priorities effectively, time manage, problem solve and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
Ability to develop and document support and wellness plans, document meetings and produce reports;
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel;

Qualifications/Requirements:
Grade 12 diploma with an Indigenous Doula certification or a minimum of 3 years of experience working within a First Nation health or social service organization;
Must be willing to obtain Indigenous Doula and Breastfeeding Support certification;
Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends and a rotational on-call schedule;
Ability to travel, possess a valid MB Class 5 Driver’s License and have access to a reliable vehicle;
Fulfill the requirements of the Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.
