Base: CA$20.00/hr - CA$25.00/hr (based on experience and assignment type).

Key Responsibilities
Interpretation: Provide accurate, explicit, and qualified interpretation between English and Barka (Berka) Kunama in community settings, including healthcare, legal, and other high‑pressure environments.
Cultural Sensitivity: Demonstrate cultural awareness when working with diverse communities, ensuring meaning and tone are faithfully conveyed while respecting cultural nuances.
Reading and Oral Translation: Read and orally translate written materials such as application forms, medical records, or legal documents.
Facilitating Access to Services: Support vulnerable populations by breaking down linguistic barriers in crucial interactions.
Travel: Travel to assignment locations as required; must have reliable transportation.
Remote Assignments: Handle over‑the‑phone or video interpretation assignments; can work from home where applicable.
Professionalism and Confidentiality:
Maintain high professionalism and confidentiality while interpreting sensitive information.
Requirements
Fluency in English and Barka (Berka) Kunama (both written and spoken).
Reading Proficiency: Ability to read and interpret written documents accurately.
Soft Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills, empathy, patience, and a commitment to service.
Transportation: Ability to travel to different locations as needed; reliable transportation.
Legal Eligibility: Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Training and Support
Training: New interpreters receive a free online training module, which must be completed before work.
Experienced Interpreters: Experience and certification in community interpreting welcomed.
