Job Overview
The Department of Critical Care Medicine, Division of Intensive Care Medicine at the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) seeks Intensivists for Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) in Nanaimo.

NRGH is a regional hospital serving a population of over 500,000. It offers surgical services across multiple specialties and has a recent 2‑floor expansion with two 12‑bed critical care units adjacent to the operating rooms.

The current group of 10 intensivists provides 24/7 in‑house coverage to the ICU and HAU units. Candidates should be Canadian CCM trained (or equivalent recognized by the CPSBC) and comfortable managing complex cardiology patients.

Responsibilities

Provide in‑house around‑the‑clock service to the ICU and HAU units in week‑long allotments.

Offer outreach support to community and rural sites, including virtual ICU level support and telephonic consultative services.





Participate in quality improvement and educational activities such as M&M; rounds, and support residents, MSI, fellows, and allied health staff learning.

Engage in research and QA activities where possible.

Reside in Nanaimo and maintain, if possible, a cross‑service appointment in their base specialty.

Qualifications

Canadian CCM subspecialty training or equivalent recognized by the CPSBC.

Experience or comfort with managing complex cardiology patients awaiting transfer.

Ability to work in both ICU and HAU settings.

Schedule
Up to 15 weeks of service per year, with 10 daytime weeks and 5 overnight weeks.

Potential instructor status with ACLS/ATLS/SCCM and TEE certification considered assets.
