Field Support Technologist (FST)
Field Support Technologist (FST) works as a crucial link between technical systems, maintenance contractors, and field inspections that sustain Alberta’s provincial highway network. The role supports the Highway Maintenance Contract, contributes to data collection and infrastructure planning, and champions public safety.

Key Responsibilities

Collect and manage asset data:

Gather accurate field data using GPS and software systems (TIMS, AIA, Ver-Mac Jamlogic) to support inventory tracking, planning, and budget forecasting.

Deploy message boards and sensors to collect traffic and speed data while maintaining safety for field teams and the public.

Audit and oversee contract delivery:

Monitor and audit work performed by contractors and consultants to ensure compliance with technical standards, safety requirements, and contract terms.

Prepare inspections, technical reports, and documentation to support contract administration and quality assurance.

Inspect and support safe highway operations:

Conduct regular road and bridge inspections to identify hazards, monitor maintenance activities, and recommend corrective actions.

Review work zone traffic accommodations and address public concerns related to safety and service quality.

Support planning, innovation, and public programs:

Assist with project estimates, service agreements, and maintenance strategies to inform long‑term planning and policy development.

Lead delivery of community‑facing programs such as the annual Highway Clean‑up and Adopt‑a‑Highway initiatives, including coordination, communication, and reporting.

Qualifications

Required : A related two‑year diploma (e.g., Civil Engineering Technology) plus four (4) years of related experience in highway maintenance or equivalent.

Equivalency : Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Examples: Related 1‑year certificate plus a minimum of 5 years of experience; Related 4‑year degree plus a minimum of 2 years of experience; Related minimum 6 years of experience.

The successful candidate must also have: extensive experience in project planning, work scheduling, and managing work within budget and contract guidelines; a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or equivalent) and ability to provide a clear driver abstract.

Assets

Experience in contract administration and managing service provider compliance.

Registered or eligible for Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) membership with the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals (ASET).
