Position Title: Board Member

Commitment: Monthly meetings, a three-year term that can be renewed twice

Position Summary Prospect to volunteer and become a Member of the Board of Directors of the Winnipeg Humane Society, Manitoba’s oldest animal shelter and welfare organization. The Board meets monthly from September to June on the third Wednesday of each of those months. Board members are expected to attend the September Annual General Meeting, all regular and special meetings of the Board, and to participate in Board Committees.

Duties and Responsibilities Make an appropriate commitment of time to prepare for and attend Board and Committee meetings, and for periodic consultation with the Chief Executive Officer and other senior managers.
Assume responsibility to be fully informed of major organizational issues, including finance and audit.
Engage in regular planning processes to develop and approve organizational strategy, goals, plans, and budgets.
Establish and hold the Chief Executive Officer accountable to measures of organizational performance.
Create and maintain policies for developing the Board of Directors, including recruitment, tenure, leadership, Board of Directors structure and composition, and Board of Directors assessment and evaluation.




Set policy and criteria for management of the WHS's financial assets and monitor performance against these policies and criteria.
Establish sound mechanisms for the engagement of volunteers in the activities of the committee and the mission of the organization as a whole.
Approve major engagements in public policy and other external affairs activities. Actively support WHS advocacy and fundraising efforts.
Help raise significant funds for animal welfare.
Endeavour to make an annual financial contribution to the WHS.
Education & Qualifications Reliability and diligence.
Strong fundraising or other relevant experience.
Knowledgeable and passionate about animal welfare.
Previous board experience will be an asset.
Proficiency in reading financial statements.
