About SmartD Technologies

Founded in 2018, SmartD is seeking to disrupt the established century-old industry of electrical motor control. We are a Series A-funded team of innovators based in downtown Montreal, scaling a product that will save energy and be used by millions.

With strategic partners on board and a clear vision, we are focused on execution and bringing real value to our customers. If you are an expert in lab setup design, electronic troubleshooting, and test execution on power electronics, passionate about turning prototypes into certified, production-ready products, and want to work with a small, dedicated, and effective team, we invite you to join our mission.

What You'll Actually Do

You're the person who makes the lab run. In this role, you will:

- Run the Bench, Run the Lab: Build and maintain test setups, execute structured test plans, and keep the lab — equipment, calibration records, inventory, cleanliness — in order so the team can move fast without surprises.
- See It Through, Prototype to Certified Product: You're hands-on at every stage — from early bring-up and troubleshooting on the bench to the UL/ETL documentation that gets our drives certified and shipped. You'll watch your own bench work turn into a product running in the field.
- Your Improvements Get Used: Spot a faster way to set up a test, a clearer way to document a procedure, a better way to organize the lab? We implement it. Technician-driven fixes are part of how this team works, not suggestions that sit in a drawer.
- Keep Building Your Skillset: Calibration training, exposure to new certification standards as our product line grows, and room to go deeper into power electronics test methodology over time.

What You Bring

- Technical Expertise:
- Soldering across through-hole and fine-pitch SMT on FR4 and MCPCB — required
- Electronic troubleshooting down to the component level, with power electronics context — required
- Test plan execution and structured test report writing — required

- Exposure to operation manuals for UL, ETL, or equivalent third-party test submissions — required (Authoring is a plus)
- Reading electrical schematics and making 3-phase 600 Vac connections — required
- Oscilloscope, DMM, and standard lab instrumentation fluency — required
- Setting up and managing an efficient system to monitor lab components inventory — required
- Maintaining the lab clean and organized at all times — required
- Quebec Electrician License "C" (Compagnon électricien) — an asset
- Motor control or VFD domain exposure — an asset
- LabVIEW or Python for test automation — an asset
- Experience: 5+ years as an electronics technician in a hardware development environment — required
- Language: Professional English is required for international collaboration (operation manuals and reports are written in English); French is an asset for our Montreal-based operations.
- Mindset: A problem-solver who thrives in a rapid-paced environment and values collaborative innovation.

Benefits & Work Environment

- Time Off: 4 weeks of paid vacation (PTO) from day one.
- Flexibility: A hybrid work environment with a focus on results.

- Commute: Conveniently located a 10-minute walk from Lucien-L'Allier (Orange line) and with immediate access to bus lines 35, 36, and 71.

Our Hiring Process

We respect your time and maintain a transparent, 3-step process:

- Introductory Call (20 min): A general discussion via Google Meet to align on interest and fit.
- Technical Discussion (30 min): A technical deep-dive with the Department Head via Google Meet.
