Health & Wellness understands that our collective work begins with the shared belief that the physical and mental healthcare we provide students is deeply relational and fundamentally focused on teaching individuals how to make informed decisions about their physical and mental health care needs. The professional health and mental healthcare and supports we provide are supplemented through peer support programmes that guide students, staff and faculty through understanding and maintaining their diverse health needs and ongoing health and wellness journey. The Health & Wellness Pillar supports campus community members with a responsive partnered approach to care delivery, utilizing prevention strategies, early identification and treatment, and crisis management through individual and group visits. By working collectively in this way, we foster increased academic and social engagement allowing students to engage, discover and thrive.

Responsibilities **Please note that during the academic year, which runs from September to April, you are required to be available for a minimum of three shifts per week.



These shifts may occur at various time, including during the day, in the evenings, or on Saturdays.**

The Registered Nurse will provide primary health care on campus, such as clinical nursing, health education, counselling, crisis intervention, emergency care and ongoing medical treatment for students. The role ensures that students are provided with the highest standard of health care and service, in a timely, caring and inclusive manner assisting the university in meeting its responsibilities of providing holistic and safe opportunities for students to learn and thrive.

Key Accountabilities
Assesses each patient’s state of physical and mental health, provides recommendations pursuant to the assessment, and accurately documents information, including observations, assessments, management plan and interventions Teaches positive health measures and provides ongoing health supervision to the patient
Documents all nursing care provided, and maintains records as required by legislation

Provides care for complex conditions for a diverse patient population, ensuring the provision of comprehensive care
Provides counselling, crisis intervention, family planning support, immunization clinics, vaccinations, rapid testing (e.g. PCR), addiction counselling, nutritional advice, and health education, applying all confidentiality standards of nursing practice
Arranges and coordinates care, tests, x-rays and referrals outside of the University as warranted, according to standard operating procedures and physician’s direction Provides explanation and interpretation of test results

Supports responses for the Nurse information line, answering questions from the campus community
Collaborates with other health care professionals both in office and in the community Collaborates in the development and implementation of information sessions and presentations (e.g. mental health, sexual health, management of common medical conditions)

Performs all tasks within the guidelines of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) standards of practice
Augments and maintains professional skills through ongoing Professional Development and Continuing Medication Education programs
Ensures that the organization and levels of medical supplies and information pamphlets are adequately maintained in all areas of the clinic Replenishes material from central sources, sterilizes instruments and cleans sterilizer, unpacks, folds and distributes linen, and unpacks and distributes materials that arrive from medical suppliers
Participates in a general reorganization, stocking and cleaning of the examination, utility, allergy & immunization, float and information rooms





Maintains an understanding of the campus community sources and referral pathways, ensuring that key stakeholders are updated on critical risk issues
Assists in writing, reviewing and updating internal policies and procedures relevant to the clinic, as requested
Participates in the evaluation of services, provides suggestions for continuous improvement of best practices, and recommends technology aimed at improving services
Takes an active role in team-building with all staff members within the clinic
Makes positive contributions to support and maintain staff morale within the clinic
Provides support within the clinic to support smooth operations and required outcomes (e.g. overseeing mask-fit testing as required)
Education
Registered Nurse from a recognized School of Nursing
Professional Qualifications and Licenses :
A member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Experience
3 years
Experience providing patient care across the age continuum and dealing with the spectrum of health care issues
Experience with the principles of health promotion, including immunizations, vaccinations, communicable diseases, sexual health and harm reduction measures
Experience in public health, emergency, urgent care and crisis intervention
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes
Demonstrated knowledge of nursing principles, assessment and technical skills
Ability to source new information resources for patients to seek resolution to challenges through research
Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
Communication skills to listen to the complete message, solicit more information as required, and give feedback on the message received
Ability to effectively present information, and conduct information sessions
Verbal communication skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information, and provide a rationale for action
Ability to think innovatively and propose new services or delivery models that meet the needs of a diverse range of clients
Ability to ensure confidentiality and privacy is maintained through the appropriate retention and destruction of information
Ability to apply regulations or professional standards to own work
Interviewing skills to counsel students and address problems, questions or concerns
Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to work independently and exercise a high degree of initiative, innovation and good judgment in decision-making
Problem solving skills and sound professional judgment, especially regarding confidential/sensitive matters
Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community
Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
