Job Description
Hands-on repair work as well as Lead Hand role directing, mentoring and supporting a team of HD Mechanics in shop
Diagnose and repair heavy duty construction equipment (bulldozers, excavators, cranes, graders, loaders, dump trucks) and trucks
Performing scheduled maintenance and using computerized diagnostic tools to isolate faults; includes working on engines, transmissions, hydraulic and electrical systems, drivetrains
Component overhaul rebuilding or replacing major assemblies like engines, transmissions, differentials, final drives, and turbochargers
Perform scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes
Road test motor vehicles and test automotive systems and components using computerized diagnostic and other testing devices to diagnose and isolate faults
Coach, mentor, and train employees within the shop; oversee daily workflow of shops Mechanics assigning and prioritizing work, providing hands-on diagnostic guidance, mentoring apprentices and junior mechanics, and ensuring repairs are completed safely, correctly and on schedule
Serve as go-to technical resource for complex diagnostics and taking charge of day-to-day shop operations
Lead by example on shop floor
Inspect and verify completed repairs and maintenance to ensure work meets company and manufacturer standards before equipment is returned to service
Communicate with Equipment Shop Foreman, parts department, and field operations on repair status, parts requirements and equipment availability
Maintaining a clean and organized garage with a focus on safety
Adhere to workplace safety policies; assist on modeling and enforcing safe work practices and addressing unsafe conditions or behaviors promptly
Qualifications
Valid 421A Heavy Duty Mechanic certification or 310T certification
Valid Class G license
Ozone Depletion Card an asset
Cat and/or Komatsu experience an asset
5 yrs+ experience as a licensed heavy duty mechanic
Experience working on construction equipment a MUST
Experience working on fleet trucks an asset
Solid understanding of heavy equipment diagnostics across engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and drivetrains
Proficient at diagnosing electrical and mechanical issues for a variety of heavy equipment using appropriate tools for troubleshooting and inspecting equipment to detect faults and malfunctions
Experience leading, supervising, or mentoring other mechanics in a shop environment
Confident decision-maker who can take charge of a situation, set direction, and hold team members accountable
Strong organizational and troubleshooting skills
Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work well under pressure
Solid planning and delegation skills able to balance hands-on and supervisory responsibilities
Strong work ethic
Strong communication skills and be a positive team player
Able to give constructive feedback and resolve conflicts
Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment
