NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK
The Water and Wastewater Plant OIT performs a variety of skilled tasks as required for technical and maintenance work of water and wastewater treatment systems including water meters. In addition to assisting in maintaining a safe work environment, the Water and Wastewater Plant OIT will proactively participate in training for advanced certification. This position requires the ability to work diverse shifts including weekends and evenings.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Utilities Superintendent, Utilities Treatment Supervisor and Water Sewer Plant Operators.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May provide direction and assistance to temporary workers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Water and Wastewater Treatment:

Assists with the operations, inspections, repairs and maintenance of all municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities to ensure compliance to required standards;

Inspects, monitors, and maintains pumping plant equipment, including disinfection equipment, pumps and control systems;

Conducts water testing and sampling (bacteriological and chemical) using various meters and spectrophotometer;

Collects, maintains and transports process samples in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements;

Carries out various test procedures and process calculations required to monitor process performance;

Maintains logs and records pertaining to system performance and conditions,



in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements;

Operates a variety of light and medium sized power construction and maintenance equipment used in the Utilities Department;

Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools; performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance; refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor;

Ensures compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, approvals and orders, acts and guidelines;

Water Meters:

Installs, troubleshoots, replaces, repairs, inspects, tests, and cleans all types and sizes of commercial or residential water meters (including meter registers, data transmitters, and data collectors);

Maintains electronic records of repairs and tests performed on meters, meter locations, and parts and meter inventories;

Maintains effective working relationships with internal and external customers, contractors and other City Departments;

Interacts with the public on a regular basis responding to requests for information and complaints; investigates, reports, and follows up on related residential/commercial complaints such as noisy water meters or pipes, discoloured water, taste and odour complaints, and low or high water pressures;

Investigates, reports, and follows up on incidents of high and low water use;

Locates curb boxes for service connects and disconnects, performs water turn on/turn offs, and performs minor plumbing and piping repairs in the field;

Performs duties related to Cross Connection Control, such as determines appropriate device to be used, installs and tests devices, and completes related documentation.
