The Royal Alexandra Hospital is one of two Tertiary Trauma Centers in the City of Edmonton and is one of Alberta’s largest and longest serving hospitals. Centrally located in Edmonton’s downtown core, the RAH serves a diverse community, including some of our province’s most vulnerable and marginalized population. PCU 31 is a 24 bed plus an 8 bed observation unit that provides care primarily to thoracic and general surgery patients. Unit 31 serves the northern region for thoracic and general surgeries as well as trauma patients. Patients are received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care units, and directly from home and/or medical clinics. A Unit Clerk is responsible for patient and family care on an acute surgical unit as directed by the Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in accordance with RAH and AHS policy and procedures. Under limited supervision, the Unit Clerk is responsible for transcribing physicians' orders and performing clerical and receptionist duties for the nursing unit. The Unit Clerk is instrumental in facilitating communication between nursing and other health disciplines, departments, patients and families, and in maintaining confidentiality of patient information. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives at the front line; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program. The position is a major asset to the smooth and efficient operation of the nursing unit.
As a Unit Clerk,
you will be responsible for the effective flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.
Previous hospital experience required. Computer skills are required. Must have excellent communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to prioritize and work within a strict timeline. Demonstrated strong organizational skills, attention to detail and accuracy required. Demonstrated reliability required. Must be able to cope with frequent interruptions and work under pressure within a stressful, demanding and changing environment. Medical terminology is essential.
