About the Role

The Animal Care Attendant is a vital member of the Animal Care team at the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society (NSPCAHS). This role supports the health and well-being of shelter animals by providing daily animal care while maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary shelter environment. The Animal Care Attendant believes that all animals deserve to be treated with respect, dignity, empathy and compassion and that they have an intrinsic value in improving the quality of life of an individual, family and community.

A significant portion of each shift involves cleaning and disinfecting kennels, cages, animal housing areas, washrooms, equipment, and common areas. Candidates should be comfortable performing repetitive cleaning tasks, handling animal waste, and maintaining high sanitation standards throughout the shelter.

Applicants with experience in hospitals, medical clinics, veterinary clinics, pet-boarding, long-term care homes, environmental services, or commercial janitorial positions are encouraged to apply.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Animal Care:

- Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, watering, and ensuring exercise and enrichment are completed.
- Administer medication and provide special care (e.g., wound care, post-operative care) as directed by the RVT, Animal Care Manager, or veterinary staff.
- Assist with restraining animals for veterinary procedures when required.
- Evaluate animals for health concerns, including checking for matted fur, long nails, and other health issues while cleaning and report concerns to the Animal Care Manager or RVT
- Maintain up-to-date health records for all animals.

Facility Cleaning and Maintenance:

- Thoroughly clean and disinfect kennels, cages, animal housing areas, prep kitchens, washrooms, and common areas.
- Safely remove animal waste, soiled bedding, garbage,



and biohazard materials in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintain cleaning equipment and ensure sanitation supplies are stocked.
- Ensure the shelter remains clean, sanitary, and welcoming for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
- Follow infection prevention and sanitation protocols at all times.

Animal Intake and Identification:

- Check stray animals for identification, including scanning for microchips, and record identifying factors such as breed, age, and gender.
- Assist with the intake of animals and ensure all documentation is completed accurately and promptly.

Customer Service:

- Provide customer service support related to adoption inquiries, intake procedures, complaints, and animal behavior concerns.
- Foster positive relationships with the public, volunteers, and other stakeholders.

Administrative Support:

- Assist with maintaining accurate departmental records and ensure confidentiality.
- Help with paperwork, animal tracking, and PetPoint software as required.
- Support inventory control and assist with ordering supplies as necessary.

Collaboration & Communication:

- Work closely with fellow team members and communicate regularly with the Animal Care Manager regarding departmental needs and activities.
- Provide relevant updates and assist with team coordination and goal achievement.

Compliance and Best Practices:

- Ensure good animal care practices are followed in all activities.
- Represent the NSPCAHS in a professional manner at all times.

Additional Duties:





Perform any other duties required to improve the function of the Animal Care Department and the overall shelter operations.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

- Post-secondary education in Animal Care, Animal Sciences, Veterinary Technology, or equivalent experience is an asset.
- Previous experience working with animals is an asset but not required.
- Experience in hospital environmental services, healthcare cleaning, veterinary clinics, animal shelters, pet-boarding, long-term care, or commercial janitorial roles is highly desirable.
- Experience cleaning high-traffic facilities, including washrooms and toilets, while maintaining strict sanitation standards.
- Ability to safely lift, bend, stand, walk, and perform physically demanding work throughout the shift.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills is an asset.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

- Clear Police Clearance Certificate
- Ability to handle sensitive situations and maintain confidentiality.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and evenings as required.
- A positive, solution-oriented attitude and a robust commitment to the NSPCAHS mission and values.
- Protective rabies titre an asset (or willingness to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations to obtain protective titre)

HOURS OF WORK

This part-time position offers 3–4 shifts per week, with shifts ranging from 4 to 8 hours. Flexibility is required, as schedules are determined based on operational needs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
