This is a senior engineering leadership position. Applicants must meet all the following requirements:
Active and unrestricted Professional Engineer licence (P. Eng.) in Ontario
Minimum 10 years of structural engineering experience
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a directly related engineering discipline
Demonstrated experience designing and reviewing structural steel buildings, pre-engineered metal buildings, foundations and mezzanines
Demonstrated ability and willingness to assume qualified responsibility and sign and seal structural engineering documents in Ontario
Advanced knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, National Building Code of Canada and applicable CSA structural standards
Previous experience supervising engineers, designers or structural drafters
Strong structural-analysis and engineering-software capabilities
Candidates who do not possess an active Ontario P. Eng. licence and at least 10 years of structural engineering experience will not be considered.
Position overview
A well-established, growth-oriented engineering firm in Markham is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer and Engineering Department Lead to direct the design, review and delivery of structural steel-building projects.
This position is intended for an accomplished structural engineer who can combine advanced technical judgment with professional accountability, project leadership and team management. The successful candidate will review complex structural designs, provide technical direction to engineers and drafters, coordinate with clients and construction teams, and sign and seal engineering documents within their area of competence.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience with pre-engineered steel buildings, structural steel framing, concrete foundations, mezzanines and associated structural systems .
Key responsibilities
Structural engineering and design review
Lead the structural design and technical review of pre-engineered steel buildings, conventional structural steel systems, foundations, mezzanines and related components
Perform and review structural calculations for gravity, wind, snow, seismic and applicable collateral loads
Review architectural and construction drawings for structural coordination, constructability and code compliance
Evaluate structural details, connections, load paths and foundation requirements
Provide practical engineering solutions that balance safety, compliance, constructability,
schedule and project cost
Professional responsibility and sealing
Assume professional responsibility for engineering work completed under your supervision
Review, approve, sign and seal structural calculations, drawings, reports and other engineering documents in accordance with Ontario requirements
Maintain complete and defensible engineering records
Ensure all professional services comply with PEO obligations, applicable legislation, building codes and engineering standards
Maintain appropriate quality‑control and document‑control procedures
Lead, mentor and develop engineers, structural designers and drafters
Assign and prioritize departmental workloads based on technical complexity, capacity and project deadlines
Establish clear technical expectations and review standards
Monitor project progress, identify risks and resolve technical or scheduling obstacles
Foster a culture of professional accountability, accuracy and continuous improvement
Project management and coordination
Manage multiple structural projects from initial assessment through final engineering deliverables
Coordinate with clients, architects, contractors, fabricators, building officials and internal departments
Confirm project scope, design criteria, deliverables and technical requirements
Communicate engineering decisions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Support projects in remaining within approved scope and schedule
Site and construction support
Conduct occasional site visits, field reviews and structural assessments
Review field conditions and respond to technical questions during fabrication and construction Prepare field-review reports and recommend appropriate corrective measures when required
Coordinate design revisions arising from site conditions while maintaining proper documentation and professional oversight
Process and quality improvement
Improve design-review procedures, engineering templates and departmental workflows
Standardize calculations, drawing-review practices and quality‑control checkpoints
Identify opportunities to reduce rework and improve project‑delivery efficiency
Support the responsible adoption of engineering software and technology
Required technical qualifications
Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible structural engineering experience
Significant experience with structural steel and pre-engineered metal building systems
Strong knowledge of applicable requirements under the Ontario Building Code and National Building Code of Canada
Working knowledge of relevant standards, including CSA S16, CSA S136 and CSA A23.3
Demonstrated experience designing or reviewing steel-building foundations and mezzanine systems
Experience signing and sealing structural engineering documents
Proven experience leading technical teams and reviewing work prepared by others
Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines and competing priorities
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to occasionally travel to project sites
Software requirements
Candidates should possess strong proficiency with:
MBS or comparable metal-building engineering software
AutoCAD
ETABS
SAFE
SAP2000
Microsoft Office
Experience with the following is highly desirable:
Advance Steel
Other structural-analysis, connection-design or BIM platforms
Candidates are not required to be equally advanced in every listed program, but must demonstrate strong structural-analysis capabilities and the ability to work effectively within a modern engineering and drafting environment.
