We are seeking a Hardware Designer to join our engineering team in Kelowna, BC. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys designing innovative electronic products from concept through production and collaborating closely with firmware, software, and manufacturing teams.
Position Summary
As a Hardware Designer, you will be responsible for the design, development, validation, and support of embedded electronic hardware used in intelligent room automation systems. You will work on products including lighting controllers, touch panels, occupancy sensors, thermostats, power interfaces, relays, gateways, and wireless IoT devices.
Key Responsibilities
- Design electronic hardware for embedded control systems and IoT products.
- Create schematics and multilayer PCB layouts using Altium Designer or similar EDA tools.
- Develop hardware solutions for lighting control, HVAC interfaces, guest room management systems, and building automation devices.
- Select and evaluate components including microcontrollers, power supplies, sensors, relays, wireless modules, and interface circuitry.
- Design analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits.
- Design power supply circuits including AC/DC conversion, DC/DC regulators, and low-voltage distribution systems.
- Develop products utilizing communication interfaces such as:
- UART, SPI,I²C,RS-485,CAN,Ethernet,USB
- Integrate wireless technologies including Zigbee,
Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi, and other IoT communication platforms.
- Support firmware engineers during board bring-up and product integration.
- Perform hardware validation, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
- Conduct EMC/EMI pre-compliance testing and support certification activities.
- Develop manufacturing test procedures and support production ramp-up.
- Participate in product architecture reviews, design verification, and design for manufacturability (DFM) efforts.
- Prepare design documentation, specifications, test reports, and engineering change documentation.
- Collaborate with suppliers, contract manufacturers, and certification agencies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 3+ years of experience designing electronic products.
- Solid knowledge of analog and digital circuit design.
- Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout software such as Altium Designer.
- Experience with microcontroller-based systems (STM32, Silicon Labs, NXP, Microchip, or similar).
- Strong understanding of:
- Signal integrity
- Grounding
- Experience working with communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I²C, RS-485, CAN, or Ethernet.
- Proficiency using laboratory equipment including:
- Logic analyzers
- Spectrum analyzers
- Power analyzers
- Excellent troubleshooting and debugging skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing products for hospitality, building automation, lighting control, or industrial control applications.
- Familiarity with lighting control standards such as:
- DALI
- DMX
- 0-10V
- BACnet
- Modbus
- Experience with touch interfaces and capacitive sensing technologies.
- Experience designing products that interface with 24VDC and 120/277VAC systems.
- Knowledge of UL, FCC, CE, EMC, and safety certification requirements.
- Familiarity with Embedded Linux or IoT gateway hardware platforms.
- Experience supporting products through manufacturing and field deployment.
