Nature and Scope of Work

This is moderately complex clerical work in the provision of transcription services to a department. Incumbents of this class type verbatim transcripts of a variety of confidential digital audio and video recordings including footage from Body Worn Cameras, CCTV and mobile phone footage and 911 calls which may be of a complex and/or sensitive nature. Incumbents of this class also assess and analyze footage and transcriptions for grammatical correctness, clarity and accuracy of specific identifiers; determine contextual relevance and admissibility of material; and make determinations on the appropriate method of notation. Considerable independence of judgement and action is exercised in the performance of assigned duties. Work performance is reviewed by a superior on the basis of completeness, accuracy and conformance with established rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Illustrative Examples of Work

- Types and transcribes verbatim a variety of confidential digital audio and video recordings and related materials including from Body Worn Cameras, CCTV, 911 calls and mobile phone footage which may be of a complex, technical and/or sensitive nature and which requires a high degree of accuracy; creates and maintains electronic documentation of transcriptions; checks and corrects transcriptions for grammatical correctness, clarity, accuracy and adherence to legal and procedural requirements.
- Assesses and analyses recordings to determine identifiers; marks transcripts with identifying tags,



labels and notes; makes determinations on relevance and admissibility of material including contextual information and appropriate method of notation; reviews auto-transcribed material and revises as required; ensures accuracy of transcribed material for admissibility and for submission to Crown; assesses transcribed material to identify personal information and mark for redaction to ensure compliance with Freedom of Information and Privacy legislation.
- Operates a variety of software systems and applications; accesses files on PRIME and reviews fields for accuracy; notifies appropriate staff or detachment members of discrepancies or errors in identifying information as required; retrieves information for the completion of transcribed material; reviews information to determine circumstances surrounding nature of occurrence; maintains electronic tracking of transcription metrics for reporting purposes.
- Provides orientation and training to new clerical staff and explains moderately complex department rules, regulations and procedures within prescribed limits; maintains departmental operating procedure manuals; contributes to the development and improvement of procedures, processes and standards related to the work and implements same.
- Maintains liaison with a variety of internal and external contacts including uniformed members; and composes routine correspondence related to the work.




- May act for a superior during periods of absence including scheduling, assigning, reviewing and supervising the work of staff engaged in transcription duties.
- Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

- Considerable knowledge of business English, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Considerable knowledge of the functions, rules, regulations and policies governing applicable department operations and activities.
- Sound knowledge of contemporary office practices, applications and procedures.
- Ability to maintain sustained focus and attention to detail including while exposed to sensitive and graphic material.
- Ability to effectively proofread and correct transcription material.
- Ability to determine relevance of contextual and/or non-verbal information on recordings.
- Ability to type 45 WMP with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality relating to the work performed.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to demonstrate excellent listening skills.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts.
- Ability to train and supervise others as required.

Desirable Training and Experience

Completion of Grade 12 plus considerable related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Licenses, Certificates and Registrations

Standard Security Clearance.
