Intermediate Materials Technician
Burnaby, BC
This role is part of the Soils and Materials team. You will collaborate closely with Project Engineers/Managers and the Discipline Manager to conduct construction observations, confirm construction material design elements, perform quality assurance/control testing, and report findings both in the field and the laboratory. Your time will be split between on‑site testing on project sites and laboratory work, with additional responsibilities assigned based on experience and proficiency.
What a day has in store for you
Execute on‑site concrete tests including casting cylinders, slump test, and air content test
Perform In‑Place Density testing using a Nuclear Densometer
Conduct asphalt and concrete coring
Collect soil and asphalt samples on site
Carry out lab work such as testing concrete cylinders, grain size analysis, Proctor tests, asphalt tests, geotechnical index testing, etc.
Review subgrade field conditions
Problem‑solve project site issues
Attend staff and project meetings when requested
Engage with clients and contractors to provide excellent service and a quick response to testing needs
What Your Experience Looks Like
Completion of, or current enrollment in,
a recognized Civil Engineering Technology diploma program is considered an asset
Minimum 5 years of experience in concrete, asphalt, and soil testing
Ability to work safely and effectively in field environments on active construction sites
Robust communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams and client groups
Valid Canadian driver’s license
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, meet deadlines, and perform under pressure
Highly organized with robust time‑management skills
Willingness to work night shifts and weekends as required
Hourly range: $26 - $29/hr. Compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, including skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location.
