The Commercial Manager will provide specialized knowledge in overseeing the commercial strategy on a project. This role collaborates with the senior operations team to develop and implement a commercial management system that drives performance and minimizes risk to the business.
What You’ll Do Here
- Change management, including schedule interpretation and claims administration
- Implement an effective system to ensure contractually-required notices are delivered to the client per the project agreement terms
- Administer project contracts (project agreement, subcontracts, consultancy agreements, purchase agreements, etc.), ensuring deliverables and timelines are met while minimizing commercial risk
- Lead drafting, review, and negotiation of contracts with clients and subcontractors to optimize financial, legal, risk, and reputational positions
- Implement and monitor procurement scheduling and plans; facilitate the tendering process for materials, goods, services and equipment; develop terms and conditions, scope, and specifications; oversee bidding with pre-qualified companies; evaluate bids and provide tender analyses and recommendations
- Issue regular reporting and analytics on commercial issues to Executives and Project Managers
- Engage with insurance advisors to develop project insurance programs and coverages
- Consult with legal advisors as needed
- Manage project close-out, including defect liability period and operations & maintenance considerations
- Lead and align a team of commercial direct reports with project priorities, ensuring accountability for results
- Maintain a good understanding of finance, accounting and project reporting
What You Bring To The Team
- 10 years experience with a contractor on major/large-scale projects, ideally tunneling or rail
- Minimum of 5 years commercial management experience on major projects through the project life cycle
- Legal, Engineering, or Quantity Surveying degree or equivalent
- Experience with various contract types (Design-Build, Lump Sum, Unit Price, collaborative delivery)
- Understanding of construction methodology in a large, complex environment
- Strong knowledge of change management, variations, claims identification, narration, and evaluation
- Knowledge of contract law in the project jurisdiction, with awareness of contractual obligations and financial functions (e.g., cash flow)
- Experience with tendering, contract administration, budgeting, procurement and subcontract administration, earned value management, and Primavera P6 (preferred)
- Proven track record with claims management and dispute resolution on major projects
- Risk identification and management experience
- Understanding of insurance program requirements for various project types
- Experience with integrated ERP systems
- Excellent organizational, communication and writing skills
- Solid leadership and interpersonal skills
- Ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders (legal counsel, client, subcontractor, consultants)
Pay range: $110,000–$150,000. Individual pay is determined based on location, education, experience, skills, and job conditions.
