A leading pharmaceutical company is seeking a Computational Biologist, Image Analysis to backfill a role for approximately 9 months (contract) while the current team member is on leave. This is a hands‑on, fast‑paced role supporting an active high‑content imaging and CRISPR screening program.
You’ll work directly with bench researchers as they design and optimize cell‑based imaging assays, turning raw microscopy images into objective, quantitative readouts that guide their experimental decisions. Expect to analyze recent imaging datasets per week, each with its own biological question and imaging quirks requiring quick troubleshooting and a fast turnaround. The biological focus of current work may shift by the time this role begins.
Responsibilities
- Partner with bench researchers for cell‑based assay development for microscopy experiments
- Build and run image analysis pipelines (e.g., CellProfiler, CellPose) and train and implement cell segmentation
- Apply appropriate statistical approaches for determining signal window in assay development, as well as multivariate analysis. This includes high‑dimensional, single‑cell data
- Perform multivariate analysis to summarize complex feature sets into interpretable results
- Package results into clear, digestible summaries and presentations for scientific stakeholders
- Troubleshoot imaging and pipeline issues independently, escalating to IT/cloud infrastructure support when needed. Specifically, you will collaboratively within an AWS and GitHub based environment
Required Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent hands‑on industry/postdoctoral experience in a quantitative life science field (computational biology, bioinformatics, cell biology, or related)
- Hands‑on microscopy and high‑content imaging experience, including multi‑stain panels (cell painting‑style assays with more than two stains)
- Imaging analysis expertise: ability to identify oversaturation, bleed‑through
- Proficiency in R or Python required; if you have a basic understanding of Python this can be considered if you have proficiency in R. Bonus if your working knowledge of Python is for image manipulation
- Solid grounding in assay quality metrics and statistical reasoning for single‑cell/high‑dimensional data
- Strong communication skills - able to translate technical findings for both scientific and non‑technical stakeholders (including IT)
Nice to Have Skills
- CRISPR screening experience
- Extensive AWS cloud computing experience
- Nextflow or other workflow management experience
Candidate must have:
- Demonstrated superior communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment
- Passion to solve biological problems and identify problems that can be efficiently solved through computational methods and algorithms
- Proactive, resourceful, and collaborative personality
- Detail‑oriented nature, adept at translating complex data into clear and concise explanations for biologists, and committed to quality and accuracy
- In‑depth knowledge and experience in computational analysis for image‑based cellular and tissue assay readouts
- Must have computational coding experience (using HPC, Amazon Web Services, Azure, or GCP) and experience doing parallelization for compute jobs
- Location: Ontario or other Canadian provinces
- Compensation: $35-$65 CAD/hour, commensurate with experience
