Position: Full time; Temporary [40 hours per week; 12-month term]

Closing Date: August 14, 2026 POSITION SUMMARY: The Municipality of the County of Inverness is seeking a temporary Solid Waste Labourer to support operations within the Solid Waste Division of the Operations Department. The successful candidate will provide operational support across municipal waste management facilities and curbside collection programs, assisting with recycling, waste diversion programs, and residential waste collection.

This position requires the ability to operate equipment, including but not limited to, skid steer, forklift, pickup-truck and trailer, and collection vehicles.

The Solid Waste

Labourer will work collaboratively with the Director of Solid Waste, Lead Hand – Kenloch Waste Management Facility, and team members to ensure the safe, productive, and environmentally responsible delivery of solid waste services.

The Solid Waste Labourer will work in both indoor and outdoor environments under a variety of weather conditions. This role requires moderate to heavy physical activity, flexibility to perform a variety of duties, and a commitment to achieving excellence in safety, customer service, quality, and continuous improvement. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide operational support at the Strathlorne Recycling Facility, including loading recyclable materials into roll-off bins, walking floor trailers, and baler hopper.

Assist with bale preparation and ensure recyclable materials are handled safely and efficiently.

Safely operate collections vehicles, including but not limited to, curbside collection (pickup truck and trailer) and rear loader compactor to complete assigned collection routes, special collections, and other municipal collection programs.

Ensure safe operation of equipment, including skid steers, forklifts, and other equipment needed to support recycling, and waste diversion operations.

Maintain cleanliness and organization of operational areas, including recycling floors, public drop-off areas, storage locations, and equipment.





Review operations manuals and standard operating procedures (SOP) to determine inspection requirements and preventative maintenance schedule for equipment.

Complete daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of equipment as per manufacturers’ recommendations and SOPs.

Submit recommendations to the Director of Solid Waste for major and minor work required for site or collection improvements.

Maintain courteous and positive public relations with ratepayers, residents of the community, representatives of organizations, and visitors, by delivering quality service.

Adhere to applicable federal and provincial legislation and guidelines, Nova Scotia Environment Approvals, Acts and Regulations.

Participate in safety meetings, operational meetings, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Ability to execute verbal and written instructions, work independently, meet deadlines, and coordinate work across teams and departments.

Ability to work in various conditions with exposure to weather elements.

Ability to work overtime and/or weekends.

Demonstrated accountability, sound judgment, and initiative to assess programs, analyze problems, and contribute to improvements.

Demonstrated commitment to a secure work culture, incorporating safe practices in daily activities, and attending training as required.

Commitment to confidentiality, ethical conduct,



and compliance with municipal policies.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED), or completion of post-secondary education.

Valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a clean drivers abstract required.

Valid skid steer and forklift operation certificate, or willingness to obtain.

Valid certification in WHMIS, and/or First Aid considered an asset.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Indoor and outdoor environment that includes exposure to varying weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and high winds.

Safety sensitive locations include roadways, construction zones, municipal properties, and remote or uneven terrain requiring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and manual labour for extended periods. SAFETY:

Labourer is expected to

Ensure all policies and procedures set forth by the Municipality of the County of Inverness are always observed.

Report all work situations which are suspected of being unhealthy or unsafe.

Report any employee whose on-the-job performance or actions contravenes established safety procedures or work practices.

Report all near-misses and incidents

Report related injuries or property damage regardless of severity.

Submit reports on accidents and other hazardous conditions discovered and promptly attend to all hazardous situations.

Participate in safety inspections and assist with the implementation of corrective actions as required.
