As a Detours Engineering Technician 1, you will support the planning, design, and coordination of temporary traffic controls, detours, and lane closures within the road right-of-way under the supervision of the engineering supervisor or senior engineering techs. Your work will support the safe and efficient movement of all transportation network users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Primary duties include:
- Review third-party temporary traffic control plans (TTCPs) in accordance with The City of Calgary Temporary Traffic Control Manual and applicable technical standards to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and worksite personnel.
- Provide oversight and guidance on the development of TTCPs and detour designs that support construction, maintenance, special events, and operational activities; and independently prepare high quality TTCPs as required.
- Coordinate with contractors, project teams, businesses, the public,
and internal groups, including Signals Engineering, Transit, Traffic Field Operations, and the Traffic Management Centre, to support safe and efficient detour implementation.
- Conduct field inspections to verify compliance of detour set ups with approved TTCPs, permit conditions, bylaws, and relevant standards, and coordinate corrective actions as needed.
- Respond to 311s, inquiries and concerns from the public, contractors, Ward Offices, and City staff.
- Oversee temporary traffic controls for a designated geographical area within the city, and review, approve and issue various types of permits and work orders in the Hansen System.
- Provide guidance to consultants, private contractors, City staff, and the public regarding temporary traffic control requirements, roadway operations, and construction impacts.
- Carry out data collection, review and implement parking changes, research and identify problems, and assist the team with technical tasks as required.
Qualifications
- A completed 2-year diploma in Civil/Traffic Engineering and less than 1 year of related traffic engineering experience.
- Knowledge of and experience using AutoCAD software and basic proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook).
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Ability to interpret technical information, apply sound judgement,
and efficiently prioritize work.
- Knowledge of transportation engineering principles, TAC guidelines, and traffic operations is preferred.
- Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation, regulations, and standards related to transportation engineering and operations is an asset.
- Success in this position requires excellent communication skills, strong customer focus, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with field crews and in a rapid-paced environment.

- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
