Victoria, BC | Onsite | Full-Time

This role is on site in the office 5 days a week in Victoria at Government and Hillside. There is no option for hybrid or remote work for this role at this time.

First Light Technologies designs and manufactures innovative solar-powered outdoor lighting systems used in parks, pathways, campuses, commercial developments, and public spaces across North America. Their proprietary technology eliminates the need for trenching and grid power, helping customers reduce installation costs while creating more sustainable communities.

As the company continues to grow, they are looking for an experienced Firmware Developer to join their engineering team in Victoria. This is an opportunity to play a key role in the development of next-generation connected lighting products while working alongside a collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering team.

About the Role

Reporting to the General Manager of Operations, Engineering & Innovation, you'll be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining the embedded firmware that powers First Light's products from concept through production.

Working closely with firmware, hardware, software, manufacturing, and product teams, you'll help build cloud-connected embedded systems while supporting product releases, manufacturing, and future platform architecture.

What You'll Be Doing

- Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for commercial solar lighting products.
- Develop firmware for battery management, charging systems, LED control, sensors, wireless communications, and adaptive lighting.
- Build connected-device firmware integrating with AWS IoT Core using MQTT, cellular (LTE-M/Cat-M), secure communications, and over-the-air updates.




- Optimize firmware for low-power battery-operated devices.
- Debug and troubleshoot firmware, hardware, and system-level issues.
- Collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, software, manufacturing, and product management teams.
- Participate in hardware design reviews and firmware architecture discussions.
- Support manufacturing, production testing, and field troubleshooting.
- Contribute to future firmware architecture and continuous product improvement.

What We're Looking For

- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of embedded firmware development experience.
- Strong experience with Embedded C.
- Experience developing for ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers.
- Experience working with RTOS.
- Strong embedded debugging and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with low-power embedded systems.
- Ability to read schematics, PCB layouts, and electronics documentation.
- Experience using Git.
