Overview of Young Sibling Peer Support Pilot:

The Hidden Carer Population in Family-Centered Health Care The Young Sibling Peer Support Network aims to bridge the gap in young sibling services, by providing a safe(r), age-appropriate environment where siblings can connect, learn, and share their experiences. Our online virtual peer support groups will focus on supporting siblings aged 8-12 years old (children who have a sibling with a disability and/or a chronic health condition). These groups are non-therapy based but provide therapeutic activities.

Each community partner’s free peer support program will include:

- Monthly online support groups, offered for free, during after-school hours.
- Twice-yearly in-person community events.

These initiatives will be organized by part-time contracted Facilitators who will be hired to lead one of four programs within their communities of Whitehorse YT, Prince George BC, Victoria area BC, and Calgary Alberta. Facilitators will be supported by a full-time Young Sibling and Family Engagement Advisor based at BC Children’s Hospital.

Role Overview:

Dedicated part-time contracted Facilitators from within the communities, will be hired and appointed to one of each of the four community partners to establish a direct link to the larger project network to maximize the program's potential through community outreach. The full-time Engagement Advisor's oversight will enable the Facilitators to focus on meaningful engagement with families and siblings, from hosting online monthly peer groups to coordinating in-person events with community partners.

We are seeking passionate and engaging Facilitators to lead our pilot program’s online peer groups and in-person community events for families. This part-time role (up to 14 hours per month – with some work during evenings/weekends)



is ideal for individuals who understand the unique challenges and needs of sibling carers/caregivers and their families.

As a Facilitator, you will co-design and collaborate to lead peer group sessions that promote connection, understanding, and friendship among siblings, providing a secure(r), supportive environment where they can share their experiences, build relationships, and feel valued.

Duties of the Role:

Contracted Facilitators will be hired to lead support group sessions and to support the overall program coordination. These will be part-time roles of approximately 10-14 hours per month. Their duties will include:

· Manage collecting data, creating reports, general administrative duties, etc.

· Liaising with the Young Sibling and Family Engagement Advisor and the Community Partner organization.

· Reviewing and updating resources (update activities to curriculum) to be used for Sibling Peer Groups, in consultation with the Young Sibling and Family Engagement Advisor and other Facilitators. These will be a mix of fun, interactive, and therapeutic activities.

· Deliver and organize engaging, activity-based monthly 90-minute virtual sessions during after-school hours - 12 sessions per year.

· Plan and execute community in-person events (at least 2 per year)

· Engage with the community by organizing patient and family engagement events for feedback and insights (online or in-person).

· Support families through the registration process, as well as providing registration support for the Young Sibling and Family Engagement Advisor.

· Evaluate online peer groups with anonymous feedback surveys for siblings and families.





· Actively recruit young siblings aged 8 to 11 within communities for program participation.

· Support the Young Sibling and Family Engagement Advisor in conducting community assessments and adapting program to their needs.

Qualifications:

Facilitators for this program will possess relevant experience in child development, family support services, and/or lived or shared experience. Essential qualifications include:

· Sensitivity to the needs of families of children with disabilities or medical complexities.

· An empathetic and approachable demeanor, with the ability to engage children and foster connections within the online peer groups.

· Creativity in developing engaging and meaningful activities for participants.

· Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage program logistics.

· Provide proof of recent criminal record check for BC, Alberta, or Yukon.

· Provide Letter of Clearance from WorkSafe for BC, Alberta, or Yukon.

· Provide Personal Optional Protection from WorkSafe, if required.

· Provide proof of personal liability insurance – minimum $1 million (cost to be covered within hourly pay rate).

· Awareness and ability to implement the BC Children’s Hospital - Child Protection Policy.

Pay and Hours:

$29.00/hr with up to 14 hours of work a month. Facilitators will submit invoicing for hours.
