Reports to: Principal Lawyer and Associate Lawyers
Position Type: Full-Time Position Summary The Law Clerk plays a key role in day-to-day management and progression of legal files.
Working under the supervision of the firm's lawyers, the successful candidate will proactively manage assigned matters, communicate regularly with clients and third parties,
prepare legal documentation, coordinate filings, and ensure files continue progressing efficiently from opening through to completion. This role requires excellent judgment, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while recognizing when legal issues require lawyer input.
Primary
Responsibilities
Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for clients on behalf of lawyers regarding procedural and file-related matters.
Manage and advance assigned files by tracking deadlines, outstanding tasks, and next steps.
Respond to client emails and telephone inquiries promptly, escalating legal issues to the supervising lawyer as appropriate.
Coordinate communication with opposing counsel, courts, government offices, lenders, and other third parties.
Prepare and organize documents required to move files toward completion.
Draft routine pleadings, affidavits, contracts, correspondence, and other legal documents for lawyer review.
Prepare court filing packages and coordinate filing and service.
Conduct legal research and prepare summaries or memoranda.
Assist with corporate records, commercial transactions, commercial real estate, and wills and estates matters.
Maintain accurate electronic and physical files.
Conduct initial reviews of new client files and identify outstanding information.
Prepare draft reporting letters to clients.
Follow up with clients regarding outstanding documents and instructions.
Prepare closing documentation and reporting packages.
Maintain limitation periods and litigation deadlines.
Coordinate examinations, mediations, discoveries, and hearings where applicable.
Assist lawyers in preparing for court applications, mediations, and trials Qualifications 3+ years of experience in a law clerk or comparable legal support role, preferably in litigation, corporate/commercial, real estate, or wills and estates.
Strong written communication skills and professional client service.
Excellent organizational and file management abilities.
Experience drafting legal documents and correspondence.
Experience with Alberta court procedures is an asset.
Ability to manage multiple files and deadlines independently.
Ability to prioritize competing deadlines.
Excellent judgment regarding matters requiring lawyer review.
High proficiency in Microsoft Office and legal practice management software.
Experience using Alberta court filing systems. Core Competencies
