JOB TITLE – MIDWIFERY ASSISTANT

FULL-TIME, FIXED TERM (ending March 2027)

SALARY - $52,000.00

JOB SUMMARY The Midwifery Assistant is an integral member of the Kenhtè:ke Midwives team, providing hands-on support that helps ensure exceptional care for clients and families. This role assists with the daily operations of the clinic and birth services by preparing clinical and birth spaces, maintaining equipment and supplies, organizing client records and documentation, cleaning and restocking rooms, and performing a variety of administrative and support duties. By anticipating the needs of the Midwifery Team and ensuring everything is prepared and organized, the Midwifery Assistant helps ensure the Midwifery Team can focus on providing exceptional care to clients and their families.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:

CLINICAL & CLIENT SUPPORT – APPROX 25%

- Preparation of clinic rooms for clients regular prenatal and postpartum appointments. Ensuring that each room is stocked with the necessary equipment for each appointment.
- Accompanying Midwives and Midwifery Apprentices to prenatal and postpartum visits in client homes during regular business hours
- Complete initial client intake forms
- Provide client support in clinic during appointments
- Greet clients and visitors in a welcoming manner, escort them to clinic rooms, and notify the Midwifery Team of their arrival
- Assist the Midwifery Team during births occurring within regular working hours, as directed

BIRTH & CLINICAL ENVIRONMENT PREPARATION – APPROX 25%

- Prepare clinic birth rooms before births including the set up of any equipment, linens, beds, PPE, etc.
- Clean and disinfect clinic rooms, birth suites, equipment, and high touch surfaces between appointments and births
- Change bedding and complete laundry as required
- Ensure closets, birth cards, and clinical spaces remain fully stocked
- Ensure equipment is clean, functioning, charged and ready for use
- Prepare, clean and maintain birth pools, pumps, hoses and other water birth equipment
- Clean, sterilize, and restock birth equipment, pool and birth bags following home births
- Ensure birth bags are fully stocked and all medications and supplies remain within expiry dates

INVENTORY,



EQUIPMENT & SPECIMEN MANAGEMENT – APPROX 15%

- Maintain inventory of clinical and birth supplies
- Identify supply shortages and submit ordering requests to the Administrative Lead
- Monitor equipment maintenance and readiness
- Process lab specimens by labelling, centrifuging, packaging, storing and arranging courier pick-up

DOCUMENTATION & ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT – APPROX 25%

- Print and prepare client documents and chart forms
- Upload documentation into the electronic medical record
- Update forms and templates as required
- Maintain client charts, including chart closure and archiving
- Receive, distribute and file incoming mail and faxes
- Prepare and forward client charts for transfers of care
- Prepare newborn footprints for families
- Maintain birth statistics
- Maintain the Midwifery Team schedule and assign new client intakes
- Book and reschedule client appointments
- Prepare postpartum documentation, verify completeness, submit required forms and retain copies within client charts

TEAM & OPERATIONAL SUPPORT – APPROX 10%

- Anticipate the operational needs of the Midwifery Team
- Support effective day-to-day clinic operations
- Assist with additional duties and projects that contribute to high-quality client care and efficient clinic operations

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

SKILLS REQUIRED

- Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize competing tasks in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when preparing documentation, client records, and clinical supplies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a professional, welcoming, and client-centred approach.




- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Demonstrated initiative with the ability to anticipate the needs of the Midwifery Team and support efficient clinic operations.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and electronic medical records (experience with Jane App is considered an asset).
- Ability to follow infection prevention and control procedures and maintain a clean, safe clinical environment.
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality
- This role involves frequent standing, bending and lifting/carrying objects up to 50lbs
- Must be self-motivated and able to organize your time effectively/plan tasks around a busy clinic schedule
- Exposure to blood and bodily fluids; adherence to infection prevention and control practices and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment is required.
- Frequent movement between clinic spaces and occasional travel for home visits or community activities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.
- Experience working in an administrative, healthcare, or client service environment.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and basic clinical procedures is considered an asset
- Experience using electronic medical records or scheduling software (Jane App experience is considered an asset).
- Ability to safely handle biological specimens and follow established infection prevention and control practices.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check upon hire
- Valid Ontario driver's licence and access to reliable transportation is considered an asset

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Given the nature and location of this work, preference may be given to qualified Indigenous candidates in accordance with section 24(1)(a) of the Ontario Human Rights Code
- Experience working in a First Nations community setting, within a health or wellness practice is a critical asset
- High level of knowledge and awareness of First Nations’ community needs

Pay: $52,000.00 per year
