: The Public Health Nurse Specialist as a member of the Population Health Unit (PHU) team consults and works closely with the Medical Health Officers. They also work with other Public Health Nurse Specialists and PHU team members; managers of public health and health promotion within the Saskatchewan Health Authority and Athabasca Health Authority; and the Ministry of Health. Their duties also entail consultation and collaboration with northern First Nations and Metis partners and intersectoral work with governmental and non-governmental agencies as required.
They work with stakeholders to support the planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based public health programs and policies by providing expert leadership, guidance and consultation in specific areas. Their primary areas of focus are immunization, maternal-child health, school health, chronic disease and injury prevention, travel health and population health promotion programs.
The incumbent is responsible for communicable disease control policy and program development and implementation and for communicable disease health status surveillance and reporting within the former Keewatin Yatthé Health Region, the former Mamawetan Churchill River Health Region, and the Athabasca region.
The focus of practice includes the areas of vaccine preventable diseases, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, food and water-borne diseases, animal bites, other communicable diseases regulated under The Public Health Act. The incumbent works closely with the Medical Health Officers, health region managers and staff, and in liaison with Saskatchewan Health, other health regions and First Nations agencies. Experience
- Progressive experience in public health/primary care nursing with demonstrated clinical competence
Education
- Master of Nursing (MN)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
- or equivalent combination of education and experience
Licenses
- Valid Class 5 driver's license
Other Education and Training
- Master's degree in nursing, community health and epidemiology, or public health or a suitable combination of education and experience is preferred
Knowledge and Abilities
- Advance computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Access).
