Nursing Student - Annex, Toronto - CAD$156.00/week

Description

About the Client:

We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 88-year-old retired professor living independently in the Annex neighborhood. He's an intellectual who enjoys reading, discussing world politics and European current events, and speaking German (his native language). He values his independence deeply and can be sensitive to feeling managed or infantilized.

He experiences loneliness and boredom, as he rarely leaves home and has limited social contact. He has mild Alzheimer's and a history of falls. He lives alone but has a partner who visits for dinner most evenings.

He's used to solitude and can tire easily when entertaining guests for extended periods.

Responsibilities:

- Provide companionship and engage in meaningful conversation
- Assist with light meal preparation, reheating food, and ensuring proper nutrition
- Provide medication reminders
- Light tidying and household organization
- Occasional grocery shopping and errands
- Monitor food freshness and kitchen safety
- Provide memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed
- Report any concerns about falls, eating habits, or safety to family

What We're Looking For:

- Someone who is a good listener and conversationalist
- Patient, calm, and respectful of independence and autonomy
- Comfortable with shorter visits initially while building trust
- Intellectual or bookish background strongly preferred
- German language skills are a significant plus
- European background or cultural familiarity helpful
- Experience with cognitive support and memory care
- Able to engage without being overbearing or managing

- Understanding that relationship-building takes time
- Comfortable with a client who may initially resist help

University nursing students are particularly encouraged to apply, as the intellectual connection would be valuable.

Schedule:

Two visits per week, approximately 2-4 hours per visit. Preferred days are Wednesday and Sunday (before 3:00 PM on Sunday). Initial visits may be shorter (45 minutes to 1 hour) as trust is established, gradually extending to longer visits over time. Flexibility and patience during this adjustment period are essential.
