Senior Technical Manager – Architectural Millwork

Technical Leadership | Constructability | Engineering Excellence | Microvellum Implementation

About this position:

Are you the person everyone turns to when a shop drawing doesn't make sense?

Can you immediately recognize when a detail won't work, a material selection will create problems, or a design isn't practical to manufacture?

If you've built your career in custom architectural millwork and are passionate about mentoring others, improving engineering standards, and helping a team produce better work, this may be the opportunity you've been looking for.

We are seeking an experienced Technical Engineering Manager to lead the technical development of our Engineering Department. This is not a traditional management role focused on budgets, scheduling, or administration. Instead, you will be the department's technical authority—coaching engineers and detailers, improving constructability, reducing engineering rework, and helping establish best practices across a growing team.

Working closely with the Engineering Manager, Production, Project Management, and Manufacturing teams, you'll ensure our engineering department consistently produces accurate, fabrication-ready drawings for some of the most complex custom millwork projects in the industry.

About the Role

This position is responsible for raising the technical capability of our engineering department.

You'll mentor a team of approximately 20 engineers and detailers, review complex shop drawings, solve constructability challenges, improve engineering standards, and help lead our transition from AutoCAD to Microvellum.

Success in this role means fewer production issues, fewer drawing revisions, stronger engineering practices, and a more capable technical team.

What You'll Do

Technical Leadership

- Mentor, coach, and develop a team of approximately 20 engineers and detailers.
- Share practical fabrication knowledge to improve technical decision-making.
- Build a culture focused on quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Lead technical discussions and provide guidance on complex engineering challenges.

Constructability & Engineering Review

- Review architectural millwork shop drawings before production.
- Identify drawing errors, specification conflicts, missing information, and constructability issues before they reach the shop floor.
- Ensure designs can be efficiently manufactured, assembled, finished, and installed.
- Recommend practical engineering solutions that improve manufacturability while maintaining design intent.

Engineering Standards & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and improve engineering standards, procedures, and quality control processes.
- Standardize drawing practices across the engineering department.
- Reduce production rework by strengthening engineering review procedures.
- Help establish consistent best practices across all engineering projects.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Engineering, Project Management, Production, Estimating, Manufacturing, and Installation teams.
- Provide technical guidance during project planning and engineering reviews.
- Support manufacturing teams by resolving technical issues quickly and effectively.

Microvellum Implementation
- Support the department's migration from AutoCAD to Microvellum.
- Assist with implementation planning, workflow development, and engineering standards.
- Help train and mentor engineering staff throughout the transition.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and standardized workflows.

What We're Looking For

Required Experience

- 10+ years of experience in custom architectural millwork.
- Extensive experience preparing or reviewing fabrication-ready shop drawings.
- Previous hands-on experience as an Architectural Millwork Detailer, Millwork Engineer, Technical Designer, or similar technical role.
- Strong understanding of commercial architectural millwork construction methods.

- Excellent knowledge of cabinet construction, joinery, hardware, materials, veneers, laminates, solid surface, metals, and specialty architectural finishes.
- Advanced AutoCAD experience.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and production workflows.
- Ability to recognize constructability issues before production begins.
- Excellent communication and mentoring skills.
- Comfortable working on-site five days per week in Mississauga.

Preferred Qualifications

- Hands-on cabinetmaking or woodworking experience.
- Previous leadership experience within Engineering, Production, Project Management, or Manufacturing.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or training technical teams.
- Microvellum implementation or advanced Microvellum experience.
- Experience developing engineering standards, technical procedures, or quality systems.
- Working knowledge of AWMAC and/or AWI standards.
- Experience with ERP systems or manufacturing software is considered an asset.

What We Offer

- Permanent full-time position.
- Competitive salary of $85,000–$105,000 , with flexibility for exceptional candidates.
- Opportunity to become the technical leader within a growing engineering department.
- Direct influence on engineering standards, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead the implementation and optimization of Microvellum across the organization.
- Collaborative team environment where your expertise will shape future engineering practices.
- Long-term career growth within an established and respected architectural millwork manufacturer.

Why This Prospect? This is a unique opportunity for an experienced millwork professional who wants to make a broader impact than producing drawings or managing individual projects.

You'll help shape how an entire engineering department works—developing people, improving processes, reducing costly rework, and ensuring every project is engineered for successful manufacturing and installation.

If you're passionate about technical excellence and want to help build one of the industry's strongest engineering teams, we'd like to hear from you.
