OVERVIEW:
The Grand River Film Festival (GRFF) is an incorporated non-profit with a mission to celebrate and inspire community through the shared experience of film. Through both an annual festival and year-round events, GRFF hosts local, Canadian, and international films with a programming mandate to explore diverse and unique perspectives and an aim to inspire community engagement. GRFF recognizes the power of film to connect people and works in partnership with organizations across the region to deliver impactful programming that builds relationships and encourages meaningful conversation.
GRFF is seeking a Volunteer Director to join the Board of Directors for a 1-year term. This position will oversee volunteer recruitment and management for the organization. The Board meets once a month year-round via video call and once per year in-person, with additional discussions happening via email. The expected time commitment is around 10 hours a month on average and up to 20 hours during the month of the annual film festival (usually in late May). This is a volunteer/unpaid position.
Onboarding support will be provided by the Chair and other members of the Board.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Duties include
- Developing volunteer roles / job descriptions, volunteer policies, and other administrative documentation related to volunteering. Maintaining and organizing volunteer records.
- Leading the development and execution of strategic initiatives for recruitment, placement, and retention of volunteers, ensuring alignment with organization’s mission and operational needs.
- Assisting the Board with special projects such as grant writing input, community engagement, and donation requests.
- Providing direction and supervision to the Events Team. On occasion, supervising volunteers and serving as the main point of contact on-site during events.
- Managing the volunteer contact email and serving as the first point of contact to address volunteer inquiries and screen applications.
The Volunteer Director will lead monthly Events Team meetings over video call (~1 hour) to discuss updates and upcoming tasks. The Volunteer Director should be available to attend in-person events and serve as a backup replacement for the Volunteer Coordinator or Event Coordinator if either is absent.
Applicant requirements include
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to engage positively with volunteers, venue staff, and event attendees.
- Previous experience in volunteer coordination or event management.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace.
- Good communication and time management skills, especially in a virtual / email-heavy environment.
- Commitment to GRFF’s mission and strategic direction.
- Occasional travel throughout Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge required.
