Overview

As a member of the military, Cyber Operators conduct defensive cyber operations and, when required, active cyber operations. They liaise and work collaboratively with other government departments and agencies, and with Canada’s allies, to enhance the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) ability to provide a secure cyber setting. Cyber Operators monitor CAF communication networks to detect and respond to unauthorized network access attempts and provide cyber support to meet the operational requirements of the Navy, Army, Air Force, and joint enablers.

- Use and maintain classified and unclassified records and publications

Work Environment

Cyber Operators work with extremely sensitive information in a high‑security environment within restricted‑access facilities. They are required to work shift work throughout their careers, though opportunities for regular business hours exist. Cyber Operators serve in the sea, land, or air environment, and on deployed operations worldwide. They may also be deployed as part of a personnel exchange program with the United States armed forces or other allied nations.

Entry Plans and Qualifications

Entry into the position is open to a range of candidates. Minimum required education is a secondary high‑school graduation diploma, Secondary 5 in Quebec, or an equivalent diploma. Additional options include:





- Direct entry for individuals with specialized skills or currently enrolled in a cybersecurity college program.
- Future entry for candidates who have completed a CAF‑endorsed college program.

Specific educational requirements include:

- Grade 12 Applied Math or Math 526 / SN 5/TS 5 in Quebec, or
- Grade 12, or Secondary 5 with Computer Studies, Computer Science, or Programming.

Individuals with specialized cybersecurity training are also eligible.

Training and Career development

The first stage of training is the Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) course, which covers core military skills and physical fitness standards. After BMQ, Cyber Operators attend a CAF‑approved college program in computer network security, covering:

- Software development
- Network situational awareness
- Responding to and reporting on cyber events
- Conducting analyses

Successful completion of the college program, or holding a relevant diploma, leads to attendance at the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics (CFSCE) in Kingston, Ontario, for approximately 16 weeks of advanced training in:

- Cyber Operations
- Data capture and statistical analysis
- Communications and data security
- Operation of auxiliary equipment





Cyber Operators may also receive specialized training through formal courses and on‑the‑job training, including:

- Network vulnerability evaluations and assessments
- Digital forensics
- Threat intelligence analysis
- Active cyber tasks
- Malware identification and analysis
- Cyber event mitigation

Highly qualified Cyber Operators may be selected for career progression opportunities, advanced training, and promotion.

Non‑Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Program (NCMSTEP): The CAF pays successful recruits to attend a diploma program at an approved Canadian college. NCMSTEP students receive full‑time salary, including medical and dental care, and paid vacation while working with the CAF for a period of time.

Part‑time Options

This position is available for part‑time employment within the Primary Reserve at selected locations across Canada. Reserve Force members serve part time at an Air Force Wing, Naval Reserve unit, or Army Reserve unit in their community, and may also serve while attending school or working a civilian job. They are paid during training and employment, are not posted or required to relocate, and may volunteer for deployment on specific missions.

Part‑time Operators may also take on full‑time positions at some units on fixed terms, depending on their workload. Reserve members receive 92.8 % of Regular Force rates of pay, a reasonable benefits package, and may qualify to contribute to a pension plan.
