Position Summary

We are currently hiring an Environmental Technician to support the Vedder River Sediment Removal Project (and potentially other projects) during the summer and fall of 2026. The Vedder River sediment removal program is a long-standing flood mitigation initiative to maintain the provincial 1-in-200-year design flood standard by preserving a minimum 0.75-meter dike freeboard. The strategy involves deep-pit excavations on seasonally exposed gravel bars, restricted to non-pink salmon spawning cycles to protect sensitive aquatic resources. This role is field-based and primarily involves environmental monitoring and species inventory and relocation projects in Chilliwack, BC.

Contract duration

August 1st to approximately the end of September

Salary

$25-$30/hr (commensurate with qualifications and experience)

Typical schedule

Monday to Saturday,



7:00 AM – 7:00 PM (subject to change based on weather and project requirements)

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct fish salvage using backpack electrofishing, gee traps, and dip nets
- Identify, count, and record salvaged fish species
- Monitor stream excavation and maintenance activities
- Conduct manual removal of Knotweed within a dry gravel bar
- Maintain and organize field equipment throughout the season
- Communicate and coordinate site activities with supervisors, clients, and equipment operators

Required Qualifications and Skills

- Diploma or a degree in relevant field
- Performs field inspections, documents findings, and works in conjunction with excavator operators and the Environmental Supervisor and/or Monitor
- Basic experience in fish species and knotweed identification
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team workplace.
- Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
- Capable of conducting self rescue in fast water conditions.
- Willing to be relocated to Chilliwack, if required.

Bonus Qualifications and Skills

- Deep understanding of the local First Nation’s culture, heritage, and history
- Ability to conduct cultural resource inventories.
- Ability to ensure culturally significant items are identified and treated appropriately

Desired Qualifications

- Electrofishing experience and certification
- Hydro-acoustic monitoring experience
