The New Glasgow Veterinary Clinic is seeking a Full Time RVT to join us! Our team is experienced, compassionate, enthusiastic and dedicated to providing our clients with excellent service and their pets with the best of care.

Job Summary

Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT) are a valuable member of the hospital team who works directly with the Veterinarian and supporting hospital staff to ensure productive and quality veterinary care at all times.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

- Assist the Veterinarian with medical and surgical procedures, including preparing patients, instruments and equipment for surgery; administering and monitoring anesthesia; and administering fluids and other injections as prescribed.
- Accurately intake patient history and document the patient exam and treatments during the appointment with the DVM.
- Conduct and assist the Veterinarian with all medical and surgical procedures using diagnostic equipment such as electrocardiographic, radiographic and ultrasonographic equipment, including proper positioning and techniques.
- Collect specimens and perform routine laboratory procedures; assist the Veterinarian with tests in hematology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology.
- Maintain or monitor equipment such as anesthetic machines, surgery monitors, scopes and ensure all equipment is in good working condition.
- Evaluate, triage, and perform emergency procedures with the Veterinarian, including administering controlled drugs, setting up IV fluids, taking x‑rays (fractures), etc.
- Prepare and administer intravenous medications, vaccines and treatments as prescribed by Veterinarians.
- Administer anesthesia to animals under the direction of the Veterinarian and monitor animals’ responses to anesthetics so dosages can be adjusted.
- Care for and monitor the condition of animals recovering from surgery.
- Administer emergency first aid,



including performing emergency resuscitation or other life‑saving procedures alongside the Veterinarian.
- Collect, prepare, and label samples for laboratory testing, culture, or microscopic examination.
- Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials.
- Provide the Veterinarian with the correct equipment and instruments as needed.
- Fill prescriptions, measure medications, and label containers.
- Prepare animals for surgery, including shaving surgical areas and placing IV catheters.
- Maintain clean examination rooms and treatment areas.
- Work collaboratively with Veterinarians to ensure all animals receive proper care and move through the system efficiently.

- Maintain a positive and professional demeanor in the hospital at all times, respecting teammates and clients, following appropriate dress or uniform guidelines, and prioritizing work duties effectively.
- Demonstrate accountability and professionalism by conducting accurate and timely results with minimal supervision.
- Plan ahead to anticipate the patient or doctor’s needs.
- Greet clients, either on the phone or in person, in a friendly and welcoming manner.

Skills & Qualifications

- Certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
- Ability to communicate ideas, express opinions, and respond to team members in a professional and positive manner, using an upbeat tone and positive body language.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast‑paced environment.
- Build positive client relationships by remaining calm in all circumstances,



displaying genuine care and compassion towards clients and their pets, being respectful and non‑judgmental, and providing exceptional customer service.
- Counsel clients on various aspects of animal care such as medication dosage and purpose, home care, and preventative healthcare recommendations.
- Answer client questions and provide knowledgeable information regarding services, merchandise, pet grooming aids, food supplies, and other non‑medical items available at the Practice.
- Effectively handle and control aggressive animals.
- Handle the physical and emotional aspects of work in a veterinary clinic, including euthanasia.
- Model a professional and courteous manner with staff and clients.
- Commit to ongoing educational development and growth.
- Possess active listening, critical thinking, complex problem‑solving, time management, judgment, and decision‑making skills.
- Proactively offer assistance to others and willingly perform job tasks that team members need help with or that may be outside normal responsibilities, including assisting with public area cleaning and maintenance.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

Position Requirements

- RVT licensed to conduct RVT roles and responsibilities in Nova Scotia.
- Candidates must have WHMIS and Basic First Aid certification or clearance.
- Must be able to lift pets or products up to 25 kg.
