Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
Apart‑time academic is required to assist with teaching and running this writing requirement course for students from faculties across Dalhousie in both the Fall and Winter terms of the 2026/27 academic year. The course is being run as a flipped classroom, with online lectures and activities accompanied by a large number of in‑person tutorials.
The part‑time academic must attend weekly teaching team meetings (in the fall, Tuesdays 13:05-14:25 and in the winter, Thursdays 9:35-10:55), and be responsible for assisting the instructor of record in a variety of tasks including: academic integrity policy and cases, academic accommodations, training and support for Teaching Assistants (which may include covering a tutorial when a teaching assistant is sick), communication with students, and general support for the principle course instructor, for a total of approximately 145 hours of work per term. Depending on the area of expertise, they may also provide or assist with course content and/or online lectures. This position reports to the instructor of record and the Associate Dean Academic for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
Course Description
This course provides a foundation in the theory and practice of academic writing. It is designed to prepare students to write analytic and research papers.
Grammatical and rhetorical terms are addressed, and the course includes several assignments to hone writing skills from planning to revision.
Qualifications/Requirements Of Position
- Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD in a humanities or social science discipline although candidates who are ABD may also be considered. Candidates with an MA degree and substantial teaching experience (as principal course instructor in writing courses) may also be considered.
- Applicants must have a proven record of outstanding teaching in large writing courses at the first-year university level. Experience teaching writing to students from other faculties is an asset.
