Job Description
The Control Room Operator reports to the Shift Manager and plays a critical role in monitoring tunnel boring machine (TBM) operations, tunnel systems, and emergency tracking systems. This position serves as a central communication point during production activities, ensuring that any abnormal conditions, incidents, or emergencies are promptly identified, communicated, and escalated in accordance with established procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Continuously monitor operating parameters for two (2) Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) through the control room systems.
Monitor tunnel infrastructure systems for two (2) tunnels, including:
Ventilation systems and airflow
Tunnel lighting
Emergency box alarms and notifications
Monitor emergency tracking systems, including the location of personnel and assets within the tunnels and TBM work areas.
Work closely with the Shift Manager, Shift Superintendent, and TBM Operators to identify, communicate, and report abnormal operating conditions or system alarms.
Coordinate communications between management, supervisors, crews, and other stakeholders during operational events or incidents.
Follow and implement emergency response procedures in the event of accidents, fires, medical emergencies, equipment failures, or other critical situations.
Maintain continuous availability throughout the shift to respond to phone calls, radio communications, and operational inquiries.
Assist in documenting incidents, observations, and operational communications as required.
Support the safe and efficient operation of tunneling activities by ensuring timely reporting and escalation of issues.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; related technical or operational experience is considered an asset.
Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong attention to detail and ability to monitor multiple systems simultaneously.
Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergencies or high-pressure situations.
Basic computer proficiency and ability to work with monitoring and control systems.
Commitment to maintaining a safe, productive, and team-oriented work environment.
Experience in tunneling, mining, construction, industrial operations, or control room environments is considered an asset.
