Overview
The Elevating Devices Safety Officer is accountable for maintaining and enhancing public safety by educating the public and industry to ensure that codes, regulations and standards of safety are understood and observed. The role is a Regular, Full‑Time, Union position based in the Lower Mainland Region (Vancouver or Langley preferred).

Responsibilities

Inspect: Provide inspection services including worksite audits, incident investigations and hazard eliminations to clients and stakeholders to ensure proper implementation of safety regulations, codes and standards. Provide input on variance requests to Senior Safety Officer when requested.

Educate: Educate clients and stakeholders on how to meet safety requirements and provide information on new requirements and trends by creating and providing presentations, demonstrations or coaching.

Train: Assist in developing current Safety Officers by providing on‑the‑job training, regular mentoring and ongoing technical support.

Enforce: Implement enforcement policies by providing clear direction and outlining consequences to clients; provide evidence for compliance and enforcement actions when necessary.

Research: Support research tasks by documenting inspections, providing audits, investigating incidents, staying up to date on industry changes and upgrading knowledge and skills.

Certification: Certify new elevating technology by reviewing engineering data, associating relevant codes and standards, conducting type testing, reviewing design specifications for compliance, identifying gaps via risk assessment, evaluating components/systems for safety and issuing variances where applicable; review installation, maintenance/service and operating procedures.

Qualifications

Knowledge of the maintenance and protected operation of elevating devices, electrical, building,



elevating and performance‑based codes and ability to stay current with code changes.

Knowledge of CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, CSA B355 Lifts for Persons with Physical Disabilities, CSA Z185 Safety Code for Personnel Hoists, 1 Canadian Electrical Code.

QEI Certification (preferred).

Broad knowledge across mechanical, electrical, construction practices and fire safety.

Knowledge of safe work practices associated with inspecting operating elevating devices, hazard recognition, testing and verification procedures.

Knowledge of operation of elevating devices from different manufacturers’ models and vintages.

Excellent problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.

Ability to manage high volumes of emails, schedule inspections from various clients, and adapt to company technologies.

Strong writing skills for concise reports, interpretation of drawings, schematics and code specifications.

Valid BC driver’s licence and willingness to travel.

Physical ability to carry a toolbox (up to 30 lbs.), climb ladders and stairways, walk on uneven ground, enter confined spaces, drive long distances.

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in elevator mechanic, millwright, heavy‑duty mechanic or electrician, or post‑secondary course, with a minimum of five years of related experience. Preference for a two‑year diploma for apprentices.

Successful completion of various Elevator Inspectors’ examinations within the first six months (70% or better).

Successful completion of Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) Certification within 18 months; re‑certification required annually.
