Regular Full Time Registered Nurse, Surgery – 3 South Surgical Unit team at Surrey Memorial Hospital, Surrey, B.C.

Detailed Overview
Provides and coordinates pre‑ and post‑operative nursing care, including assistance with surgical and interventional procedures, discharge teaching for adults and children in inpatient and outpatient settings, in accordance with BCCNM standards of practice.
Responsibilities
Assess patients and collect information from multiple sources to form nursing diagnoses, plan, perform and evaluate nursing interventions.
Observe patient acuity, intervene to manage care, and address emergency situations.
Assist physicians with procedural positioning and use of procedure‑related equipment.
Collaborate with patients, families and care givers to develop and modify care plans, fostering empathy, trust and respect.
Participate in care and discharge planning, ensuring effective implementation and communication with interdisciplinary teams.
Coordinate nursing care, set priorities, delegate tasks and refer to interdisciplinary teams as per protocols.
Teach patients and families about health maintenance and discharge planning, assessing learning needs and providing demonstrations.
Maintain accurate documentation of assessments, diagnoses, interventions, outcomes and referrals as per best practices.
Participate in committees, conferences, quality improvement, research activities and educational programs.
Serve as preceptor or mentor for new nursing staff and students.
Provide feedback on clinical support tools and equipment effectiveness.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing.
Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Two years of recent clinical experience in the designated area, with completion of post‑graduate coursework or certification applicable to the clinical area, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
Initiate and maintain intravenous therapy.
Complete initial and ongoing patient assessments, delivering nursing care using clinical and diagnostic reasoning.
Communicate effectively with patients, families, public, medical staff and interdisciplinary teams verbally, written and electronically.
Demonstrate empathy and sensitivity to diverse cultures, advocating for patient and family needs.
Integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources for effective problem‑solving.
Teach and instruct patients and families about essential health topics.
Organize and prioritize workload.
Collaborate and promote cooperation among interdisciplinary team members.
Apply evidence‑based practice and research to support nursing decisions.
Operate relevant equipment and computer applications.
Possess the physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
