Overview

As a member of the military, Nurse Practitioners provide care and treatment to ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and supported populations in primary and tertiary care settings in Canada and while on operation.

Scope of Practice

Nurse Practitioners work within a cooperative practice model with other members of the health care team and lead the delivery of health services within their area of practice.

They may work in one or more of the following domains:
Primary Care
Acute Care
Education and Training
Policy and Program Management

Work Setting

As a Nurse Practitioner in the Primary Reserve Force, you will enroll through a specific Reserve unit. You will work part‑time – typically one night per week and some weekends – with possibilities of full‑time employment. Relocation is generally not required.

For those in the Regular Force, after completion of required training you will be assigned to a base. Some relocation may be required.

Entry Requirements





Direct entry is possible for candidates who already hold a university degree and a license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in a Canadian province or territory, with civilian experience.

Training

After completing Rank Qualification Lieutenant training, clinical experience is supplemented with a formal military health care provider course at the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Centre in Borden, Ontario.

Specialized skills may be pursued through formal courses and certifications:
Aviation Medicine
Dive Medicine
Submarine Medicine

Part‑time Options

Reserve Force Nurse Practitioners are trained to the same level as Regular Force counterparts. Civilian experience must reflect employment as a Nurse Practitioner in Adult Primary or Acute Care.
