Overview
As part of the Department of Protective Services/Fire Department, the City of Humboldt is currently seeking to fill one (1) permanent, full-time Deputy Fire Chief position. The Deputy Fire Chief is a senior officer responsible for providing leadership in emergency response, administration, fire prevention, public education, inspections, and investigation. This role supports both operational and administrative functions of the Fire Department and assists other departments as needed.

The Deputy Fire Chief plays a key role in incident command during fires, rescues, hazardous materials responses, and large-scale or multi-agency emergencies, ensuring firefighter safety, accountability, and continuity of command in the absence of the Fire Chief. The position also supports firefighter training and development by coordinating training programs, monitoring competencies, ensuring compliance with provincial and national standards, and organizing exercises to maintain operational readiness.

In addition to emergency response, the role contributes to overall department management through policy development, regulatory compliance, reporting, budgeting, asset management, scheduling, health and safety documentation, and recruitment and retention initiatives.



The Deputy Fire Chief also leads emergency preparedness and community risk reduction efforts, including fire prevention programs, public education, pre-incident planning, emergency coordination, and collaboration with regional partners

Qualifications

Current membership in a Fire Department

Level II Fire Certification, Level I Fire Instructor Certification and Level I Building Inspector License are considered assets

Five (5) years of supervisory experience within the fire service is considered an asset

Extensive knowledge of contemporary firefighting practices, emergency services, fire prevention, and fire apparatus operation

Thorough understanding of Fire Department regulations, policies, municipal bylaws, and provincial codes and legislation

Satisfactory Criminal Record Check

Compensation

This is an out-of-scope position with a salary range of $66,446 - $80,766

Employees are eligible for the employer matched defined pension plan, annual paid vacation days, and a comprehensive health and wellness plan.

General work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with a 1-hour lunch.
