Responsibilities
- Provide user support to general users, beamteam members, fee-for-service clients, and CLS staff.
- Beamline and endstation setup.
- Assists with sample preparation and trains users on how to operate beamline.
- User support beyond normal working hours in accordance with established CLS procedures.
- Measurements and data analysis.
- Supervise and support users to ensure that they are able to perform their scientific experiments in an effective and safe manner.
- Analyse and solve beamline or technical problems and develop recommendations to solve difficult, complex or unusual problems.
- Aid the Beamline Responsible in beamline upgrade/maintenance projects.
- Develop technical expertise in specific areas of beamline operation and instrumentation including software.
- Prepare beamline documentation and operational manuals.
- Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is a requirement of the position.
Qualifications
- For the Associate Scientist level, a relevant undergraduate or Masters degree is required. For the Scientist level, a relevant Masters degree or Ph.D. in the physical sciences or engineering is required.
- A minimum of two years of directly related experience with a Masters degree, or a minimum of one year of related experience with a Ph.D. degree.
- Experience with Infrared spectroscopic techniques is required.
- Experience using microscopes, laser-based systems, advanced instrument development, and optics would be strong assets.
- Basic programming skills in Python is an asset.
- Candidates should demonstrate a transparent aptitude for research, particularly in scientific programs requiring collaboration.
