The Hydrovac Operator is responsible for the successful completion of the hydro excavation process.

Major Duties Performed

Dig underground utilities with Hydrovac and various speciality tools.

Dig trenches, holes and other excavation, as required.

Properly secure and transport equipment to work site and safely off-load.

Maintains equipment; lubricates, cleans, fuels, and conduct minor repairs.

Ensures work is performed in a safe manner.

Operating Equipment Duties

Completes daily pre-work inspection reports; inspects tires, controls, fuel; forwarding to the Fleet and Equipment Supervisor weekly.

Excavates trenches with high awareness while working around live existing utilities.

Ensures equipment is operated in a safe manner that prevents accidents and damage of property, estimating weights and distances.

Maintains awareness of surroundings; responds to signals and directions from the Foreman, Spotters and Flaggers.

Uses hand signals or radios to coordinate movements.

Performs minor repair work as needed.

Informs and advises the Fleet and Equipment Supervisor of repairs or maintenance required.

Maintains awareness of road use to minimizes disruptions.

Health & Safety Duties

Operates tools, equipment and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.

Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.

Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and reports any conditions that are not correctable to Foreman/In-Charge immediately.





Completes FLHA daily upon arrival at the job site.

Ensures public safety around the job site (work zones).

Abides by Berto’s Health and Safety Manual and WorkSafe BC procedures at all times.

Other Duties as Required
There will be occasions where the Hydrovac Operator will be asked to complete duties outside what has been outlined in this job description. The Operator may also be on occasion required to work overtime.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to multi-task.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Self-motivated and a team player.

Attention to detail to ensure the safety of self and others.

Robust problem-solving skills.

Comfort working in high-stress environment with weather fluctuations.

Job Requirements

3+ years’ experience operating a Hydrovac.

Valid Class 1 or 3 driver’s license and experience operating a manual transmission tri-drive truck.

Valid class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Access to reliable transportation.

Basic understanding of construction principles and procedures:

Ability to identify a utility service.





Ability to distinguish utility markings.

Experience using small power tools is an asset, including:

Cut Off Saw, Plate Tamper, Drill, Jumping Jack, Generator, Air Compressor, Pneumatic Tool, Shovels, rakes, etc.

Regularly works near moving mobile equipment in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat & humidity, & exposure to dust & asphalt.

Noise level may occasionally be loud.Hazards associated with the construction industry including overhead & underground hazards.

Needs to be aware of other trades personnel working in the same job site.

Physical Demands
The Hydrovac Operator is required to sit, maintain focus, and carry out repetitive tasks for extended periods of time. Steel toe boots, hard hat and safety vest are to be worn at all times.

Organizational Scope

Reports directly to Superintendent/In-Charge on a daily basis.

Direct communication with other employees, including work crew, office administrators & management.
