Position
Freelance Conference Interpreting Technician – a freelance collaboration opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Event Coordination
- Support event organizers with platform rental arrangements as needed.
- Create event links for interpreters and participants, or assist organizers with link creation as required.
- Obtain presentations, event materials, and coordination instructions from organizers in advance.
- Verify that all necessary equipment is operational and meets event requirements (e.g., platform type, additional devices).
Event Technical Support and Coordination
- Coordinate and facilitate an early log‑in session for each event, ensuring a minimum duration of 30 minutes prior to start time.
- Conduct comprehensive sound checks with speakers to eliminate echoes, background noise, and audio distortions before the event commences.
- Verify interpreters have accessed the correct log‑in link and are assigned to their designated interpretation channels.
- Enable event recording promptly for the main floor and any additional interpretation channels as required.
- Activate AI captioning for the main floor and other relevant channels, ensuring accessibility for all participants.
- Share presentations and event materials with participants and interpreters in real time as speakers present.
- Monitor and manage chats, polls, and breakout rooms during the event, responding to participant needs as necessary.
- Provide immediate troubleshooting and technical support for issues such as joining difficulties, unexpected disconnections, or audio problems throughout the event.
- Terminate recordings and AI captions at the conclusion of each event and ensure secure storage of all files and captions.
Post-Event Follow‑Up
- Engage in post‑event follow‑up by sharing event recordings and AI‑generated raw captions with the event organizer, as required or applicable, ensuring timely and secure delivery of all relevant materials.
Requirements
- Education and Training: General post‑secondary education or equivalent combination of relevant experience and training in audio‑visual technology, communications, linguistics, or technical support.
- Skills and Abilities: Capable of coordinating both remote and in‑person conferencing events that require interpretation; solid troubleshooting skills; precise communication across multiple stakeholders.
- Technology & Tools: Ownership of a professional conferencing platform license (with ability to rent it out for contracted events) is considered an asset; proficiency in using Zoom, Webex, MS Teams, or similar platforms; ability to provide secure storage and delivery for recordings and AI‑generated captions.
- Rates: Competitive hourly rates required for this position.
