Job Summary
Cogency Inc. is seeking an experienced Senior Java Backend Developer to join a leading Banking and Financial Services client in Toronto.

The ideal candidate will have 6+ years of hands-on experience designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, REST APIs , and cloud-native technologies. The candidate should possess strong backend engineering expertise with experience building high-performance enterprise applications and integrating distributed systems.

Experience with Camunda BPM for workflow automation and business process orchestration is considered a strong asset (Nice to Have) .

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain enterprise backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.

Develop scalable, secure, and high-performance RESTful APIs and Microservices.

Build reusable business services and backend components following enterprise design standards.

Implement authentication and authorization using OAuth 2.0, JWT, and Spring Security.

Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability.

Develop event-driven and asynchronous processing solutions where applicable.

API & Integration

Design and develop REST APIs for enterprise applications.

Integrate backend services with internal and external enterprise platforms.

Implement secure API communication and enterprise integration patterns.

Work with messaging platforms and asynchronous communication technologies.

Database Development

Design and develop database solutions using relational databases.

Write and optimize complex SQL queries.

Develop stored procedures, views, and database objects.

Optimize database performance and indexing strategies.

Microservices & Cloud

Develop cloud-ready microservices using Spring Boot.





Participate in containerized application development using Docker.

Collaborate with DevOps teams for Kubernetes/OpenShift deployments.

DevOps & CI/CD

Participate in CI/CD implementation using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps.

Support automated deployments, release management, and environment promotion.

Work closely with DevOps teams to improve build automation and monitoring.

Agile Delivery

Participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.

Perform code reviews and mentor junior developers.

Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.

Support SIT, UAT, production deployments, and production support.

Troubleshoot and resolve production issues.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.

6+ years of hands-on Java backend development experience.

Strong expertise in:

Spring Boot

Spring MVC

Spring Security

RESTful APIs

Experience with:

Hibernate / JPA

Maven / Gradle

Git

Strong knowledge of:

Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)

Design Patterns

Experience with relational databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.

Experience with messaging technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or IBM MQ.

Experience with Docker and containerized application development.

Familiarity with Kubernetes or OpenShift.

Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.

Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.

Nice to Have





Experience with Camunda BPM for workflow automation and business process orchestration.

Experience designing and implementing BPMN workflows and decision models (DMN).

Knowledge of Camunda Process Engine, Tasklist, Cockpit, and Optimize.

Experience with Java-based workflow integration using Camunda APIs.

Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.

Knowledge of GraphQL.

Experience with Redis or distributed caching technologies.

Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps.

Exposure to Terraform or Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

Banking Domain Experience (Preferred)
Candidates with Banking or Financial Services experience will be highly preferred.
