The Parks and Roads Services branch is seeking dedicated, team-oriented individuals to join us! In this diverse role, your work will shift dynamically with the seasons, focusing on vibrant turfgrass maintenance in the summer and critical snow and ice control during the winter. You will operate a variety of specialized equipment and vehicles, from heavy-duty tractors to precision trimmers, ensuring our parks, outdoor rinks, and open spaces remain welcoming. As a key collaborator on our team, you will also help mentor less experienced crew members, champion workplace safety standards, and provide exceptional service to engagement participants and the public daily. What will you do?
Mowing and Trimming Operations (Summer Focus)

Mow and trim turfgrass across City-owned parks, open spaces, and along roadways using gas or electric push mowers, zero-turn mowers, flail mowers, and large ride-on equipment (such as 192 and 72-inch mowers)

Safely operate various trucks ranging from 1/2-ton to 2-ton capacities, including pulling trailers to haul equipment to different work sites

Provide continuous coaching, mentorship, advice, and guidance to inexperienced staff members on the crew

Carry out mechanical weed control in strict alignment with current legislated guidelines

Collect litter and refuse to ensure public spaces remain clean, safe, and tidy

Assist the crew leader and provide active coverage as needed to ensure smooth team operations

Snow and Ice Control including Spring Sweep (Winter Focus)

Remove snow and maintain parking lots, sidewalks, and outdoor ice surfaces using hand tools, plow trucks (2-ton and below), 4000/5000-series John Deere tractors (or equivalent), toolcats, MT-7s, 1585 John Deere machines, and skidsteers with blades, brooms, sanders, and sprayers

Conduct sanding operations utilizing 1-ton or 2-ton trucks to keep surfaces safe for the public





Build and maintain outdoor skating rinks and ice surfaces using 3-ton water trucks and ice resurfacers

Apply calcium chloride with truck and MT mounted sprayers

Operate small powered equipment such as backpack blowers, snow blowers/throwers, BCS brooms, power brooms

Perform manual labor for the Snow and Ice Program, including hand snow removal with shovels and ice chippers as well as filling sandboxes

Conduct daily equipment safety inspections and properly document that all tools are safe to use before starting tasks

Perform daily Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs) and closely adhere to standard operating procedures to maintain an incident‑free environment

Other Shared Responsibilities

Maintain park sites, facilities, and ground areas for cleanliness, which may include litter collection, yard sweeping, sanding, and flagging

Perform shrub bed maintenance, including planting, pruning, weeding, and watering

Ability to follow maps and routes for required work and prepare required job materials based on specific work orders

Act as a leader of service demonstrating accountability and mentorship to other front‑line staff; including a willingness to backfill in people leader roles to cover short term vacancies

Other labourer duties or redeployments when weather conditions halt primary seasonal tasks

Qualifications
Qualifications :

Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade

One (1) year of experience in mowing/trimming operations and/or snow and ice control

Skills required for success:

Previous experience operating specialized machinery like 4 or 5-series John Deere tractors or front‑end loaders

Familiarity with safety and environmental management programs (such as ENVISO)

Experience utilizing digital mapping or automated routing systems for tracking snow clearing routes

Competency in equipment operation and ability to train employees on various equipment uses and functions

Adhere to standard operating procedures and essential safety measures

Ability to interpret work assignments, read work orders, and fill out digital records or task cards accurately

Strong adaptability to handle shifting priorities, evolving daily work plans, and occasional equipment downtime

Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions





Strong independent decision‑making skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities

Exemplary customer service skills when interacting with the public

Basic computer skills (google applications, data entry, email)

Conditions of Employment:

Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position

Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls

Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications

Work Environment:

The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains

The work occurs primarily in an outdoor setting

Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, poor air quality, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur

Potential exposure to occupational hazards such as biohazards (bodily fluids, needles), chemicals, and aggressive domestic or wild animals

This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 100 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, and using feet/hand control, requiring physical stamina and resilience

This role requires 24/7 availability, which may include weekends, nights, and statutory holidays , particularly for SNIC operations

Placement will be based on operational need, city-wide
