The Manager,English Scripted Business Affairs (Toronto) plays a key role in the managementof business affairs for the English Scripted department of Sphere MediaToronto, acting as the central liaison for business affairs with externalpartners and internal departments while reporting to the SVP, Business Affairs,English Scripted.
Key tocommunication flow, production financing and deal flow this position acts asthe hub between English Scripted Toronto, Finance, internal Business Affairs andBusiness Affairs of external partners to ensure the successful financing andcompletion of projects in development and production.
Responsibilities Include Leading English Scripted Development and Productiondepartments in the coordination, tracking and management of all businessaffairs elements to ensure clear flow of communication both internally andexternally
Ensures proper information and communication flow on allbusiness-related matters between English Scripted and internal departments
Acts as the day-to-day communicator with the businessaffairs departments of broadcasters, financiers and other external stakeholders
Interpret guidelines, rules andregulations, etc. and advises English Scripted team on eligibility for externalfunding.
Tracks and manages external funding deliveries andinvoicing, coordinating with internal departments as needed
Manages and oversees submission of all external funding andtax credit applications on time and within the guidelines, coordinating withinternal departments as needed
Creates and maintains tracking systems for all BusinessAffairs related elements for English Scripted projects
Elevates and works to resolve business affairs relatedissues as needed with various internal departments
Tasks Include Development Responsible for business affairs management in thefollowing areas:
Acts as the “hub” between Development, Business Affairs andFinance internally, ensuring clear flow of communication and documentationbetween departments;
Tracks key dates and timelines, including rightsmanagement, external funding deadlines and delivery deadlines
Oversee all external financing applications, including CMFand associated development financing agreements
Oversee project-specific drawdowns for financing andpayments, communicating between Development, Finance, BA and external partiesas needed
Acts as the first point of contact with external businessaffairs departments
Production/Post Responsible for business affairsmanagement in the following areas:
Drafts, negotiates and/or reviews business affairsdocumentation including:
Writers and Story EditorAgreements
Location and rental agreements
Credits, Paid Ads, & other obligationsstatements
Approval and restrictionsummaries for talent, dubbing as well as advertising and promotional
Production agreements templates for use by production
Music agreements and paperwork
all WGC documentation required for production
Clearances Package for Production including ReleaseTemplates
Advise senior leadership team and executive producers onvarious business and legal issues related to content production, rightsclearances,
distribution and other issues as needed.
Manage business matters relatedto production, distribution and co-production (both interprovincial andforeign)
Location & DPR Summary for closeout applications
Feed into license and distribution agreements
Liaise with external counsel, as needed.
Manages and tracks required production business affairsdocumentation including:
Assist with bank closingdocumentation, together with Finance and Production departments
Legal and Business Affairsdelivery components to all financiers
Proof of Residency declarationsand CAVCO IDs
Errors & Omissionsinsurance and Additional Insured certificates
Assist in ensuring compliancewith Canadian content regulations (CAVCO, CRTC) and international co-productiontreaties.
Manages the submission, tracking and delivery of thefollowing:
All external fundingapplications including CMF, Bell Fund, COGECO, Ontario Creates, NOHFC andothers as applicableincluding overseeing the close out of such fundingfollowing delivery
Official Treaty Co-Productionapplications
Guild adherence and ongoingadministration
Title Report/Opinion
CFM/AFM application and Letterof Adherence - plus delivery to broadcaster
CRTC applications
Tax credit applications
Qualifications 8-10years’ experience in a business affairs role with an established media productioncompany
Strongoral and written skills
Exceptionalorganizational skills with the ability to work in a high paced environment
Abilityto interpret and evaluate information to solve complex problems and drivedecision making
Demonstratedunderstanding of Canadian rules and regulations in the industry
Solidunderstanding of artist collective agreements (e.g. WGC, ACTRA, WGA, DGA, etc.)
