Are you passionate about preserving and restoring Edmonton’s natural beauty while leading a dedicated team of environmental professionals? As an Ecologist within the Restoration and Ecology unit, you will play a pivotal role in guiding regulatory policy, advancing natural area management strategies, and overseeing wildfire fuel load mitigations across our city. You will lead and empower the high-performing Natural Area Operations team team, consisting of urban foresters to field crews, ensuring our natural and naturalized spaces are healthy, resilient, and safe. Working collaboratively across departments and with community partners, you will bridge technical ecological data with day-to-day operational decision-making. This dynamic role offers the opportunity to shape impactful programs like A Greener Edmonton Plan and directly influence the stewardship of Edmonton’s vibrant urban forest. What will you do? Lead, mentor, and supervise a technical team of ecological land management professionals, urban foresters, wildfire experts, and field crews
Provide technical oversight and direction regarding tree risk management, wildfire fuel load reduction, and ecological restoration
Review and contribute to operational policies and management plans, such as the Urban Forest Management Plan Public Tree Bylaw, and Corporate Tree Management Policy
Oversee field restoration projects to ensure annual target metrics are met safely, on time, and within budget
Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs), hazard assessments, and quality control audits for field operations
Respond to public inquiries, notifications, and engagement participant feedback regarding natural areas and tree management in a professional manner
Collaborate across City departments, developer consultants, and external groups to support environmental compliance and project delivery
Qualifications Diploma in Forestry, Landscaping, Biology, Ecology,



or related education or a closely related environmental discipline
Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible experience in translating technical ecological data into operational direction, including at least 2 years of experience leading and supervising staff
Assets Degree in Forestry, Landscaping, Biology, Ecology, or related education
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification
Professional Biologist (P.Bio.), Skilled Agrologist (P.Ag.), or Registered Professional Forester (RPF) designation
Skills required for success Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
Demonstrated program and project management abilities, from planning through to field implementation
Proven capability to coach, lead, and foster a collaborative environment across multidisciplinary teams
Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision‑making skills under shifting weather and operational priorities
Experience leveraging GIS and data-driven insights to inform operational choices
Knowledge of natural area management and best practices
Working knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., Migratory Birds Convention Act, Corporate Tree Management Policy, OH&S;)

Conditions of Employment Successful candidates are able to be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),



such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) or higher
Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance
Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Possession of Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications

Work Environment Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur

Salary Range: $ 47.172 - $ 59.281 (Hourly); $ 98,495.140 - $ 123,778.730 (Annually)
