Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

PSYO / NESC 3137 (Research Methods in Cognitive Neuroscience) gives an overview of neuroimaging and other techniques used in cognitive neuroscience (including fMRI, ERP , and others) focusing on how they work, how they are applied, and their inherent limitations. Labs include experience collecting and analyzing ERP data and fNIRS data.

The Part-Time Academic will be responsible for teaching a 3000-level lab course, Research Methods in Cognitive Neuroscience ( PSYO / NESC ). This course fulfills a laboratory credit; as such, it must include lessons and assessment incorporating research methods and data interpretation. The class is being offered in person on Dalhousie’s Studley campus. The anticipated enrolment is 20 students, and the course has support from a TA130.

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will include:

- Developing and delivering 12 weeks of content, including lectures, readings, lab activities, and assessments.
- Preparation and administration of assessments (e.g., assignments; quizzes/exams).
- Grading assessments and providing timely feedback to students (in collaboration with the course TA).
- Offering approximately 2 hours per week for student consultation; responding to student emails in a timely manner.
- Providing course content (e.g., syllabus, notes, grades) on Brightspace, Dalhousie’s learning management system.




- Maintaining a record of all student grades (including grades for each assessment component) in Brightspace, and ensuring timely submission of final letter grades to the registrar’s office.
- Teaching occasionally requires work after the formal end point of a course (for example, in cases where a student has extenuating circumstances or academic accommodations that require a deferred final exam). If such cases arise, the Part-Time Academic must facilitate tying up loose ends, either by completing the work themselves, or by providing the necessary materials for the department to complete the work on their behalf (e.g., answer keys; Brightspace access).

This position reports to the Chair of the Department.

Qualifications/Requirements Of Position

- Applicants must have a graduate degree in Psychology, Neuroscience or a closely related discipline, demonstrated teaching effectiveness, and research or teaching experience in cognitive neuroscience.
- Previous experience with Dalhousie’s learning management system, Brightspace, is considered an asset.
