The Good Samaritan Society (GSS) is participating in the Christian Health Association of Alberta (CHAA) Health Care Aide Apprenticeship Program, a workplace-based training program. Under this opportunity, GSS will hire up to 3 casual Care Aide Learners (CAL). On successful completion of the Program including passing the Provincial HCA exam, the candidate must then register with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) to become a regulated Health Care Aide in Alberta.

Must meet the enrollment requirements as per the NorQuest College HCA education program. Details of the Norquest College requirements are available at:

Care Aide Learners can be placed at Good Samaritan location in Taber, Alberta.

The CAL provides support to the health care team in the provision of resident care in a continuing care environment. This opportunity is designed to provide hands-on training and experience to individuals enrolled in the Christian Health Association of Alberta Health Care Aide Apprenticeship Program. CAL’s act in a dual role as an employee of The Good Samaritan Society (GSS) and a student enrolled in an HCA Apprenticeship Program completing their education





A CAL provides care assistance and services in a caring, compassionate manner that recognizes and supports the unique needs, abilities, and backgrounds of the residents. CALs are accountable for the tasks assigned to them and shall only provide care within the boundaries of their knowledge, competencies and role limitations. CALs are required to ask for assistance from a regulated health skilled if they are unsure how to perform their assigned tasks. CALs are responsible for knowing their limitations and restrictions and declining tasks and responsibilities when the needs of the resident exceed the CAL’s level of competence or is outside their job description as outlined below.

CALs work under the supervision of a regulated health professional and will be assigned residents who are stable and predictable in their care needs. CALs are responsible for appropriate monitoring and reporting signs, symptoms, or changed circumstances, as defined in the resident’s care plan, to the supervising regulated health professionals in a timely manner.

Requirements:

- Candidates must meet Norquest’s English Language Proficiency (ELP) and academic requirements
- Must be able to attend the required Norquest’s orientation and to attend the online classes twice a week for the next year.
- A current and clear Criminal Records Check Form and if applicable a Vulnerable Sector Check that has been obtained no more than 90 calendar days prior to the hire date.
- A tuberculosis screening that has been completed no more than 12 months prior to the hire date.
- Food Safety Basic or equivalent for Alberta employees.
- Must be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada to be eligible for the program.
